Title: Another newbie!
Post by: GaryBC on 10 December 2009, 11:45:00
Hi All

I'm not new to Omega ownership as I've had my 2.5Cd since it was a few months old back in "W" reg times! (And before that I had a Senator - as recommended on a very old Top Gear by Quentin Wilson. Remember him?)

Anyway. I've had the old girl since almost new and, up to a few months ago, have never had any need to do anything besides servicing, food and water. But age is starting to show a bit now (almost 10 years old and nearly 200k miles on the clock) and things are starting to fail. So I joined up here!! And very useful it has been too as, with your 'help' I recently changed the heater bypass valve!

Many years ago I did all my own car maintenance - being an engineer by trade nothing much scared me off (although I drew the line at overhauling both a diff and an overdrive!). I even restored a Triumph TR5 in my youth!

But when I look under the bonnet of my Omega I blanch at the thought of even the simplest of jobs (and I'd need my bumps felt if I even considered an ABS ECU!!). So your step by step guides, and specific threads, are invaluable.

But here's a thought. Many threads contain text like, "pop the car over mate, I'll take a look at it for you". Have you considered some sort of database to enable guys like me to get in touch with guys like that in my area? It's all very well to be told "just whip it [ABS ECU] off, send it to BBA Reman, and whack it back in once they've breathed their magic on it", but I know when a job is beyond me and no garage I have found so far is prepared to do this for me (they'll fit a new/refurbished one for me - but then the car has to go to Vauxhall to be rebooted). So how about it? Anyone in the Egham area of North Surry wanna "whip it out" for me?

And even when I'm not researching a particular job it is useful to go 'grazing' for odds and sods!

Brilliant site - well done to all!
Gary

Hi Garry, welcome to the forum. I used to be the same, did all my own mechanics etc, I now leave it to my son mostly, just the thought of all the work involved climbing under the car, all the wiring and piping to contend with, aching back etc etc, must be getting (got) old. :-/

TR overdrives, diffs and (I forgot) PI metering units! I know my limits!! There wasn't much else I bottled out over though!
