Driving down lane 3 of the M5, at 90mph - suddenly a horrific noise, car's backend started snaking all over the place.
Had a real job to control it believe it or not.. but managed to hold it and get the car safely onto the hard shoulder.
Didn't take the police long to arrive!
I'll post up some pics of the failed tyre, it is ripped to shreds...

Its a scary experience James when that happens..

so why did it fail. underinflation?
glad to hear you survived, fortunately it was a rear (had a few myself (mostly due to neglect of works vans), i find rears more controllable)

No idea why it failed.. certainly not underinflated. I was on a journey and, ironically, had checked all pressures about half hour before it happened!!

damage to valve for some reason? thinking why it would happen shortly after checking? Check others in case garage's gauge was inaccurate?

Your lucky mate glad your ok.
Was it dark ? my mate had this happen with newish tires turns out they found out he had hit a small bit of metal and it shreaded the tire and Bang
so it was just rubbish on the motorway, he was not as lucky as you he hit the centre barrier and smash in the front of his car

Glad to hear you and the car are ok James. :)
Reminds me of when we had a blow out on the M6 front drivers wheel - scary shit!

Same as......

Glad you are all OK .. blowouts never fun, but better the back than the front, especialy at those speeds !! :)
-
I had a front go on the 2.0CD - no real drama - just that the tyre destryed itself before I could stop
-
I haven't had one for a loooong time, (crosses fingers!), but I did have one of my front tyres blow out whilst overtaking a car years ago. I didn't have too much trouble controling it, in fact I completed the manouvre, but it certainly makes your bum clench!!

Nexen tyres strike again ? :o :o :o
