Title: Nixoro newest project
Post by: nixoro on 12 July 2006, 08:55:46
Now as many may know I now have 2 omegas one I bought as a cheap fixer upper.

Mainly doing this one up for my Dad as he like mine.

Another 2.0 16v on an M plate in Black. Interior is mint and the bodywork has a few rust marks.

Most of the main stuff has been done on it such as Cambelt and waterpump, exhaust manifold, Catalytic Convertor.

Brakes, tyres need sorting and the gear change.

Gear change is slightly jumpy, my first thoughts were clutch slipping but not 100% it is, was thinking do a fluid change to see if this makes life any better. My other car clutch was not as bad as this one, still I may just get it done for peace of mind.

Any other Ideas would be most appreciated

Fluid change is well worth doing as a starter and pretty easy to do.....start with the cheap simple stuff first, thats my moto!

Is it an auto? I get the impression it is a manual?

Hence the fluid change, Vaux changed the fluid type a couple of times before settling on one type which can be retro-fitted into all boxes.

It does require that you drain the box, fill with the new fluid, run it a bit, drain it again and then fill again to flush it through but, it does tend to help.

How difficult is a gearbox fluid change? Mine clunks a bit when changing gear (manual) and am thinking of giving it a go.

I read the best thing to put in after a change is auto box fluid? Is this correct?

I only use Vaux fluid as I have never been able to correctly identify exactly the type of fluid used.

Its easy enough to change as there is a drain plug at the rear of the box and a fill/level plug on the drivers side. The level should be 9mm below the level/fill plug so you need to make up a dipstick type arrangement from some suitable wire.

Again, you need to flush the box with some fluid before the final re-fill if it pre98ish or doesnt have a paint mark on the drain or level plug.

The gearbox fluid change when I did mine was made easier by removing the gearbox which is when I did my clutch,  the car itself since the gearbox fluid and clutch change feels alot better. smoother gear change and the gears engage without any problems.

I used genuine Vx stuff which they use across the range from what I was told at the parts desk.

I used 1.2ltres as stated in the haynes and it was 9mm below the filler hole.

Had a look at the car yesterday, after I changed the cambelt I was getting a nasty clanging noise from one the top cams, I did a full oil and filter change and my dad threw in some wynns for good measure as it was loud.

Now its purrs like mine so bunus engine is sound now, just got too sort the brakes and tyres check the clutch and get it MOT'd.

On the black omega there is signs of a tow bar having been connected and I noticed yesterday the towbar light fashes with the hazards on I checked the fuses and 29 was not there.

Would removing the bulb cause a problem?

No it wouldn't

If you have aircon then the tow relay is located in the drivers footwell I think.
