I am just about to try yhe paperclip test. Laidback says its best done with engine running. Do I start the engine and then short the pins OR short the pins and then start the engine
Cheers
-
Codes are:
12 Diagnotic startup
31 Crank sensor--to be expected as engine not running
16 Knock Sensor 1
What do I need to do??? Is it just the sensor as I always use good fuel.
-
Do you loose the 31 when engine running? (short out pins, and start)
-
Dont know--I'll go and try
-
Yes, just 12 and 16
-
Hi
What diagnostic plug are we playing with here????
-
The OBD socket in the fusebox...
-
Sounds like knock sensor is knackered or unplugged. Someone will be able to tell you which knock sensor it is (v6 has 2)

Now I return to the question I asked last night, is it OK to drive in this condition without any major damage?(I HAVE to go on holiday, I am Knackered)
-
Not entirely sure - it may keep retarding the ignition on that bank. Though I doubt it would keep retarding until it does damage, I couldn't say for certain.
Have you done any work recently (ie, is it possible its been left unplugged, or wiring caught somewhere)
-
Is it 16 pin?? and what pins do you short??? A & B ??
Can anyone confirm which system? Bosch and Simtec MPi?
-
No,nothing that would interfere with a sensor.
Can one the experts tell me where No.1 knock sensor is located and if it is a reasonably easy job to change?
Are these thingies just plug'n'play kind of thingies or what?

Read the thread linked to above...
v6 is motronic

Yours is a later 2.2, dont think it would work

Mines moronic ;D
-
Correct, it will only work on the older engines, the new ones need a fault code reader :(
-
Knock sensor 1 is on cylinder 1 which is the drivers side.
How does it drive, if its knock sensor then you get no ECU light until you first rev it and then it runs very flat (low on pwoer)
Check the wiring has not got caught in the aux belt and damaged
-
Drives absolutely fine Mark. No loss of power and EM light on permanently.
-
Does it ever cut out or struggle to start?
-
No, everything really does seem normal. Got 31mpg to Liverpool and back yesterday and I didn't hang about ;)
-
Its worth giving the knock sensor plug a good clean then......usualy by the EGR valve or on a bracket on the cam cover, simply follow the wire up the left hand side cam belt cover edge....
-
I'll do that tomorrow. Its dark and p******g down at the moment.
The Boy and Mark--Thanks--I am really grateful for your help on this one. [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Not a problem an if it persists you will have to make a 45 minute drive south some time...!
-
Please dont tempt me Mark. There is nothing more gratifying than seeing someone who knows what they are doing, and is honest, looking at your car....or phone...or telly
