Hi,
I have a 2000 2.5v6 saloon face lift.
Owned it for three years tows like a dream and drives even better.
Just got the air bag light on and after looking through some threads it looks like a diagnostic lead may be worthwhile purchasing.
Could anyone give some advice on what works and whats don't?
Thanks,
p.s thks for everyone welcome messages

Did you do anything to cause the airbag light to come on? if not then its likely that the 'squib' behind the steering wheel has failed.
Once you fix the fault then the Tech 2 lead and a pc should reset the light for you/
-
For airbag, you will probably need th 'cheapo tech2 lead' - search for tech2 on ebay and it should be around £40 - £50.
The software is buggy and annoying, but does do airbag stuff.
You need laptop with COM1 port - many usb to serial adapters are troublesome.
-
The cheapo tech2 lead wouldn't find the fault (unplugged seat loom) on my 98 MV6, but did reset airbag light once I'd fixed fault. Others have had a little more success with it....
-
hi,
Not sure whether I caused any fault or not but the light came on after a long haul with the car packed to the gunnels and maybe one of the plugs got disturbed under the seats and caused a bad connection, would a diagnostic lead point me to the defective airbag or seat belt tensioner?
-
It should point you to it, though the cheapo tech2 software doesn't always that the fault code text (so you only get number). Sometimes, it does it in Hungarian instead. I cannot stress how poor the software is, yet it is the only low cost tool to do non engine stuff on Omegas, and cheaper than a single diagnostic check at dealer.
Of course, if you live near me, I do low cost diagnoses with a real Tech2 (the real tech2 is what dealers use)

Will these (http://cgi.ebay.com/U380-OBD-2-EOBD-CHECK-ENGINE-SCANNER-CODE-READER-OBDII_W0QQitemZ330022650341QQihZ014QQcategoryZ30921QQcmdZViewItem) read the codes from a later car? :-/

I doubt it...but the Tech II experts will be along shortly....

The cheapo Tech2 lead I borrowed claimed to read Vauxhalls from 97 on. Probably with varying degrees of success. I only tried on my 98 model.
Unlikely it would read Vectra-C/Signum or Astra-H as they are CAN bus cars. Even real Tech2 needs an add-on called CANdi for those buggers (good job I have a CANdi then ;))
If you can tolerate the buggy software, learn Hungarian (some stuff still not in English) and have a computer with COM1 (forget that software claims to be able to do other COM ports), it'll be £40 well spent IMHO.
Not a replacement for the real thing though ;)

It also read my 2.6 facelift 2001, if this info is of any help to anyone.
(The engine codes and airbag modules seem to work OK, though the transmission ECU and other modules were not accessible)

The Tech2 is propriety GM, and such is capable of communicating with all of the car’s ECU-driven systems – transmission, central locking, ABS, etc.
Generic ODB-II readers will typically only read the engine ECU. This is what made the ‘cheapo’ Tech2 so interesting – it seems to be able to communicate with all of the car’s propriety systems, pretty much like the real Tech2, even if it did not have all of the functionality of the real thing.
But the results were disappointing so far, as even though the various modules and ECU’s are listed in the software main menu, most of them failed to work and did not communicate with the car. The assumption was that the hardware can do the job, and the faults are with software (buggy, and in Hungarian...) – but until we see a fully working example of software and hardware, it is not possible to say for sure.
I still think that as an engine code reader the 'cheapo' Tech2 is worth the £45 buying price. And it does seem to be able to reset codes, something which again most generic code readers don’t do (not the cheap ones anyway).

Will Tech2 tell me whats wrong with my Climate Control?

I think it will - but the person that really knows the answer is TheBoy....

Does anyone know how much vauxhall charge to plug in to Tech2?
-
I think the last time I went to Vx it cost about £40 + Vat never been there since.
Good Luck in finding a cheap Tech2 place.
-
Dealer charges vary, but usually around £45 + VAT for simple plug in and read codes.
Needless to say, the lucky souls who live near me get a much better deal ;)

It can read my gearbox ecu.....i suspect it depends on what type of ecu you have.....i think i was lucky

Will Tech2 tell me whats wrong with my Climate Control?
It will read my climate ecu as well....but again....i think it depends on ecu fitted....but by the looks of it the later the model...the better success ;)

Is this with the 'new' software? Haven't tried it yet, even though some good soul ;) gave me a copy a while ago.

Apparently the replacement software isn't much better. Sorry. :(

:) :)
Cruise enabled, project car fault coded.... ;)
I shall also be the 'test' car for updating the software for the later boot release found on cars after 2002 :)

My Vx Dealer charges £45+VAT for 'inspection', whether Tech2 is required or not. If you happen to have your car serviced at Vx, then ask them to do whatever extra job you want while it is being serviced, it works out far cheaper than booking it in for a separate job.
I was offered a cambelt change by Vx at the 4y service for £260, declined as I didn't believe them that the cambelt needs doing at 4y, joimed the 'other' forum and had Mark DTM kicked my butt for not having it done, went back to the dealer a couple of months later, been quoted £420(!) this time, negotiated it down to a not-insignificant £320 and had it done.
