Hi all
Just been to look at a mates 2.2 that apparently suddenly just started to run rough.
Well he said it was 2.2....its a facelift, V reg, but says 2.0 on the back of it.
Shuda popped the bonnet to have a look......but in my rush i didnt.
Any way put my cheapo tech2 on it and it came up with P0351.
Which is Ignition coil 1 high input/incorrect signal.
Hearing it run.....it certainly sounds like its running on 3 cylinders....
So im assuning its the coil pack :-/
Didnt like the odd cracking noise coming from it tho'
Would a faulty coil pack make the engine produce this extra odd noise as well?
Did cross my mind the cambelt might have jumped and this cracking noise is the tensioner bearing.....but i wouldnt have thought i would be getting P0351....its not an old code....coz i cleared it and it came straight back.
Any ideas/ suggestions?

Well if I'm right if it is a 2.0 it would have a dis pack not the coil.
What does the car idle like.
Could even be dodgy leads.
If the engine was say 1 tooth out it would sound like a tractor but not as loud imo.

The DIS pack on TheBoy's V6 project did't make any extra noise, just made it run like crap (on about 4 cylinders..)
Tbh i have not seen a 2.2 in a V plate, seen it in W's but not a V.
Most likely its a 2.0...

Could well be a 2.2 then if thats the case.
Wonders whether its had an engine replacement.

a 2.0 will have dis, 2.2 is coil per plug. on a v, it is most likely a 2.0

1st thing to do is check for water, oil in the plug wells. If it's running on 3, this could be the cause.

2.2 is coil per plug . All convieniently packaged into one nice long lump that just sits on top of the plugs.
Slide the EcoTec black cover backwards on rocker cover, lift out, and you will be faced with the coil pack.
Disconnect the loom at the back of the coil pack, and prise off the unit, can be a bit of a git sometimes, as the unit is well seated on to the plugs underneath .
If i re-call correctly about £70 off of EBay for a new one, dont go to a VX dealer as there expensive !
And whats wrong with having a 2.2 on a V plate ! Mines 2.2 facelift on a V !

Hey Taxi Driver, if you was a REALLYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY REALLYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY good friend, you could pop off your coil pack and try it on your mates !!!
Presuming of course it does have a 2.2 engine fitted !

Mark....that was going to be my next step ;) asumming it does have a 2.2
If its a 2.0, i'll wash my hands of it ;D
Just wondered about the not very nice noise......
Also apparently it was running fine then this happened.....no warning....it also now keeps cutting out when idling....
So if it is a 2.2 changing the coil pack would be a good idea given the code i read from it?
Dunno what the mileage is but its bound to be high.....it was used as a Taxi ::)
If i swap em over and it cures it.....i'll send him vx dealer for a new one...only £100+vat....bargain ;D

Nice one TD, i see your a good friend indeed.
But a TOP friend would let him keep the coil pack, and make him buy you the new one ;D
Hope it does cure his problem, and also hoping that the noise you can hear is electrical cracking from a coil breaking down or shorting to earth

I did think of that....me having the new coil pack ;D
And actually thats a good point.....the noise im hearing maybe electrical...but it is quite loud :-/
Will let you know tomorrow when i have a look at the engine.....2.2 i'll have a go :)

2.2's dont do that :o .....ur mixing the prob up with totally unreliable V6's AA ;D

Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaa nasty thursty lumps those V6's !
Oil / water trouble, oil cooler problems, head gasket problems, rocker gasket problems , Longer oil filter changes

I'm fairly confident that if it was a bearing faliure of any kind, it would make a craking noise but tend to make more of a screeching noise !
Surelt cant be that doomed or be that much of a coincidence that the coil pack might be on its way out and the tensioner bearing at the same time !!!
If it is tensioner bearing , its maybe not expect that the cars engine be on this earth much longer RIP :'(

Maybe a full set of cylinders, but a sandwich short of a pinic for spending all that money on fuel and spark plugs ;D

In all fairness the v6 (esp 2.5) isn't much worse than 4 pots on fuel unless you boot it everywhere. Obviously, the 2.0/2.2 is a little better economy wise, cheaper to insure, esp for younger drivers, and a damn site easier to work on...

Serioiusly, i had the opurtunity to change my car nearly a year ago now ( owing to the fact i tried syncronised car dancing and came of worse)
Always fancied an Omega, het paying insurance, so opted for a 2.2 !
When the next oppurtunity arrises, i will be going for a V6 version !
Kind of cutting my teeth on the Omega brand, and LOVING IT !

Its fixed :D
And it was 2.2 after all.....
It wasnt the coil pack.....nor water in the plug wells.....
But a knackered spark plug......the earth point on the plug had disapeared :o
New plugs and started up.....no missing....lots of revs and still no missing....then crack crack noise :-?
Let the revs drop and cracking noise went away....let it idle for a few mins....still ok....rev'd again and still ok.....and noise hasnt re-appeared :)
Now if i was to guess what the odd noise was.....i reckon it was the bit of the plug that had disapeared...and into the cylinder :( Hopefully no damage has been done......and the said bit has now been fired out down the exhaust.
I guess thats what happens when the plugs aint been changed for 2 years ;)

Well done, for the diagnostics .
I should imagine the finger on the end of the plug isnt that hard, and the valves are harder !
As long as there isnt any tappet/valve noise now, you could well have got away with it !
I once dropped a spring washer down the inlet manifold of a Capri, ohhhh hahahahahhaha you could hear it working its way back trough the engine and exhaust ! . I even managed to find it after wards and it was mashed to hell !!! Amazing what a few thousand hits on the valve assembly will do to a washer !
Just wonder why it was making such a noise !!! Was it really that loud !!!

Well ive heard the 'cracking' noise on mine when the waterpump and cambelt tensioner bearings were going on my meega and the noise on my mates was a lot louder......very similar sound just lots louder!!
