Title: Random speedo/rev counter/everything no power!!
Post by: Tezray on 02 September 2006, 21:04:58
Today, after a few mintues driving i looked down at my clocks and absolutely everything wasn't working! No speedo, rev counter, gauges, MID, nothing! Then suddenly, it all just came back on and worked perfectly normally  :-?

Then, tonight it also flicked off and then back on just as i left my house. This time i had my lights on and the backing lights to the dash went. I'm presuming i've just got a loose power connection of something? I did do a few short journeys today, could it be that my battery was low or something?

At first i thought about the ABS/TC unit, but i've just done a search and these seem to throw up slightly different problems.

Other than that, touch wood she's still running beautifully  :) Oh, and i'm getting an extra 2-3 MPG around town since the rebuild, every little helps!

Check the alternator output.  If it's high you can get weird electrical faults.

But it does sound like a power or 0v connection.

have you replaced the MID recently or done any work on the dash area?

Just make sure its all seated right and 'clicked' in.

When working on Jaimes TB1 we found that his temp gauge only worked when turning right!!  ;D
Did't work in a straight line only when you turned the wheel to the right  ;D ;D ;D

Turned out to be a loose connection behind the dash.

Its probably not that since the whole dash fails, but its worth just checking....

Hmm, i also thought about a loose connection. Next time it happens i'll give the dash a tap!! lol

Occasionally i've also been getting "fld/low beam vision" or something like that, could they be linked?

Tbh, she's running now so all these problems seem very minor in comparison!

Just see if they dash is properly inserted - if its one of the earths you'll lose everything. firmly press around the tacho/temp gauge area and see if it seats better...

I dont suppose it runs off one of the earths that runs to the back of the passenger head? Because i sheared one of the bolts when removing the pass. head and now 2 of the earths are sharing one bolt  :-?

Shall be checking that if it does.....I'll also check the dash tomorrow though  ;)

Wouldn't have though that sharing an earth would be a prob, though I know the earthing between engine and chassis does sometimes prove troublesome...

I didn't think it'd be a prob, although if it's worked loose it may well not be connecting very well. I shall investigate in the moro....

I'd be very surprised if it's the earth connection. If it was it would affect more than just the instrument cluster.  ::)

If your termination is tight, it will make no difference sharing the one bolt/earth point.

I would reckon the problem lies with the multi-plug at the back of the cluster. If you can, remove the cluster, an easy enough job to do, and try re-seating it.

I should warn that there are reports of turning on ignition with cluster removed brings on airbag light, so just be aware ;)
