Title: Dexron II or III?
Post by: Andy B on 04 September 2006, 14:47:21
I think I know what the answer will be before I ask but ....
Vx's TIS (at the dealers  :) ) says that the gearbox oil - 3.0 auto Elite - should beDexron III 90 510 269 however when you then turn to EPC it says that this part number has been superceded by 90 350 342 which is Dexron II  :-/ So if I change the fluid in the gearbox am I putting in the proper Dexron III from Partco etc or do I put in Vx's superceded part no. & put Dexron II in?
PS After dropping the sump pan and removing 4.4 litres (probably from my drive! :-[ ) what about the remainder in the torque converter?

Not sure about the Vx P/Ns, but the auto gearbox if definately Dexron III, not II.

The Power Steering however, uses Dexron II, not III - apparently Vx tried using Dexron III for the PAS but it was causing leaks so they downgraded it back to Dexron II.

Incidentally, the general view here is that there is no point in getting Vx own-brand ATF - any good quality full-synth Dexron III AFT should do. Vx are apparently quite expensive on this item for some reason.

As for the draining, you drop the main oil pan as well the small one in the front, and that's about it...

There is also a filter which needs to cleaned (or replaced if it is damaged).

Vx Trade Club prices are VERY cheap on most Vx-brand service items, e.g. engine oil (4-for-the-price-of-3 offer), spark plugs (around £2 each), brake pads (£12), etc....

Partco sell their Dexron III at c£15 for 5 litres, Vx however sell in it 1 litre bottles or a 55 litre barrel!  :o We could do a 6 (wo)man group buy  ;D

It also doesn't help that it's not available on Trade Club.  :-?

True. My Trade Club Vx dealer gives me normal Trade prices for anything that is not on TC, but in this case even so it is too expensive.
