Title: torks bolts
Post by: johnny.dee on 11 September 2006, 13:24:08
I have a 1996 2.5v6 that I am attemting to replace the cam belt on. I am as far as removing the auxillary pulley on the crank and I find that 2 of the bolts have rounded off bolts. the tork socket just keeps revolving on the bolt. Have tried to fit a smaller size but it doesnt fit. I dont want to do any  further damage to the bolts in case they snap of. how do I remove these 2 bolts?

you say you have tried a smaller size, have you tried a bigger size that may now fit in the enlarged hole?

also use some fluid ( freeze and release or penetrating fluid) and try again

Try a bit more leverage if space permits  ;)

Thanks for your reply, I could bang on a slightly smaller tork socket with a hammer but will it work? I dont want to be left with 2 bolts that are damaged beyond removal. There is no room to get a drill in to drill them out.  :-[

I would be knocking a smaller torx socket on and go from there.....do make sure you bang it all the way on though.

maybe i am missing something, but if its rounding the hole is getting bigger therefor wouldnt a bigger torx be needed rather than a smaller one, again i may be missing something as i am consumed with blind dvla consumed rage ( other post)  ;)

They are bolts with a socket set type top, not screws with a screwdriver tip.

A hex socket can sometimes be used if they aren't too tight.

No, these are god almighty tight. The crap mechanic made a bad job of it the last time the timing belt was changed. I think He may have used an ordinary socket set then. come to think of it most of the bolts are past their sell by date so will invest is some new ones when I come to re-install.
