Title: Another cruise upgrade query !!
Post by: daveb on 13 September 2006, 16:16:04
Hi there,

I am a newbie to this site, but previously got some good tips from the 'other place.'

I have read the guide on how to install the stalk with cruise controls on and I have recently got hold of one to try it out. I have a facelift 2.5td auto saloon Vreg year 2000 and it sounds like it is 50/50 as to whether it will be plug and play or plug and pray - or even plug and pay!

I don't often get my hands dirty on my car as it is all a bit complicated for me, being a bit of a duffer with electronics. It sounds very straight forward though. Before swapping the indicator stalks over, should i disconnect the battery, and what are the ramifications if I do disconnect the battery.

Is there anything I should need to do once I power back up - obviously, the clock will be wrong, but is there anything else to worry about?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Dave.

As mentioned the clock but also make sure you have your radio code handy as it will need reprogramming.

You will need also to reset the one touch windows and possibly reset the sunroof if you have one.

Other than that disconnecting the battery shouldn't affect anything else.

Good Luck with the install, hope it goes your way without needing to be enabled.

Thanks a lot.

With the one touch windows if you press and hold the window button to the up position for a few seconds you should then here a click best to do this one switch at time. Then just a case of testing.

As a rule I usually disconnect the negative but others on here may disconect another way.

Hope this helps :)

Also slacken off the battery lead, but don't disconnect it right away. Then turn your ignition on & off & then disconnect the lead within 15 seconds & it'll save the alarm going off  ;)

Remember if you have a TD, the stalk is different to the petrol ones - it only has 2 wires (still has the 4 pin connector, just 2 pins are missing).  If the ECU is not enabled, you need a real Tech2 to do it...

i just sold my diesel cruise stalk, i fitted it to a members car here.

He had a '95 2.5 Diesel Estate, I swapped the stalk staight over without disconnecting the battery and it worked straight away.

It does seem to be that the majority of 2.5TD cars are already enabled...

Hi everyone,

Thanks for all the tips I got for adding cruise to my car.

I was amazed to have bought both the Indicator stalk (with cruise controls) and wiper stalk with computer controls as a pair for £8.00 off Ebay, yes £8.00.

I disconnected the battery, took about 2 minutes to take the plastic casings from around the steering column, 20 seconds to remove stalk, another 60 seconds to fit replacement stalk - once I had found the additional connector which was trying to hide! Another 3 minutes to refit the plastic casing - a little trickier to refit around the rubber grommits. Re-connect battery and reset the one touch windows - the stereo just worked as usual, no need to enter radio-code!

Everything done in less than 10 minutes - amazing!

Now for the scary bit - will it work.

Started her up and drove in the direction of the nearest dual carriageway. Got up to 65mph - hit the switch and bu**er me - IT WORKS - YIPEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am chuffed to bits. I have had cruise on my last few cars and really missed it, so to be able to get it working on my car for £8.00 within 10 minutes seems incredible - I guess I'm lucky that my car was already enabled.

Anyway, thanks again, especially Nixoro, who was first to pitch in with help - I really, really appreciate everyone's help.

Dave.

Glad its working :)

Generally, it seems, the 2.5TD do have it preenabled :)

I assume it was the 2 wire stalk you got?

Good news, bet your chuffed now.

He must have fitted the 2 wire one...

Why disconnect the Battery????

Just had a look at my old Haynes - The stalk is controlled by the ignition switch so will be dead. No need to disconnect anything. Wouldn't think it would have altered on the facelift models [smiley=thumbup.gif]

Yeay, very chuffed that it's working.

Whether it was two wire, or 4 wire - I haven't got a clue - didn't count them. I rather innocently plugged it in and hoped for the best!

The only reason I disconnected the battery is because others with greater knowledge of these matters than me suggested it was a good idea.

Thanks again.

Dave.
