Title: Tapping V6
Post by: JamesV6CDX on 15 September 2006, 11:06:04
I've got a tapping noise on the V6. It's apparent when the engine's runing from cold or hot.
Oil level and quality is fine.

putting my head in the wheel arch it sounds like it's coming from the lower part of the engine, maybe towards the back. It almost sounds like it's coming from the bellhousing but I can't be sure because the noise travels so much.

The tapping increases with engine speed, but after so many revs it's difficult to hear.

One thing I'm almost sure of - I don't think it's a manifold tap.

Cause for concern, or just turn up the radio? :D

If we investigated(or let Vx investigate) every tick, rattle or squeak our omegas made, then they would be permanently off the road.
This is actually one danger of becoming involved in a forum such as this. We are quite happy with our cars until we read of a problem that MIGHT exist. If it is running fine, leave it alone but, obviously, keep an eye(or, in this case, ear) on it.

What i would suggest is get it up on ramps and run the engine see if the noise is still there, it might be something simple like a loose heatshield knocking. :)

Nah, it's internal alright :D

It sounds like the bottom end of the engine.

As some of you may know I'm saving for a facelift Omega, so I don't throw much love at this current N reg one. All I really want is some sort of reassurance that the engine isn't going to seize up or anything too horrible :)

A mates car siezed and we noticed the oil pressure switch was leaking, not totally sure if this was the cause but worth a look.  :)

Good luck with finding your facelift.

I'm afraid there are never any guarantees, but, looking on the bright side....theres nothing like your old car blowing up to make you get that newer one you fancy ;D

V6man54deg once mentioned a phantom knock which happens under no load with synthetic oil on some Omegas:

"this is where the big end hits the web of the crank under no load conditions - you can hear it at idle"

I have to partially disagree with that theory. Yes thin oil might be the cause of the phantom knock but not the fact that it is synthetic oil. There is absolutely no reason that the fact that an oil will cause a noise just because it is synthetic. Only if there is a viscocity difference this would occur. ;). I believe the problem in this specific case would be the lifters.
