Hi all, i went to view a omega(private sale) 2.6 cdx 2003 today, the car is upto date with all service stamps from a vaux dealer and the last was done in july 2006.
The car todate as covered 51000 miles.
Now the seller who has owned the car from new is not sure if the cambelt/tensioners etc have been changed, he believes it has because if it should have been surely vauxhall would have done it, but he was never given any paperwork from the dealer to support this (now the owner believes it should be changed at 80k) but the majority say 40k is it 40k or 80?
I have heard somewhere vauxhall revised this - they did suggest 80k but reverted back to 40k does anybody have a web link regarding this?
Why would the dealer service department not give the customer a service worksheet copy surely this would make life easier for the seller and make life alot simpler for the buyer? any ideas.
I did advise the seller to contact the dealer ... they must have the car on file and surely they must have a record of all jobs done.
Any advice is much appreciated.
Dave.

Cambelts must be changed at 40K, Vx reduced this from 80K some years ago as they were getting tensioner failures.
If it has been regularly serviced by a Vx dealer they should have a record of this.
If there is the slightest doubt, then the cambelt, tensioners and water pump must be changed A.S.A.P. as failure could result in a new engine.
If the work has not been done, and the car has now done 51K, they could fail at any minute.

Also, read this link....

Hope this helps.

Yeah, 40k. A user here, Allenm, will confirm what happens if you don't. Unless you have DOCUMENTED proof that belt AND tensioners have been done, this will need to be done now. Some people will say they easily get 80k between changes, but all too common, many people don't.

It is cheap enough to do yourself, with robinhood's cambelt dvd ;)
-
Thanks all i will advise the seller of the same and ask him to contact his dealer RV and try and obtain written proof, if for some RV can't produce the document I won't purchase the car.
thanks again
Dave
-
and if no proof its essential its done - so possibly a bargaining tool to lower the price ;)
good luck
-
Ring RV yourself, and ask them what they have done, and when...
-
.......
if for some RV can't produce the document I won't purchase the car.
thanks again
Dave
If the rest of the car is OK it would seem daft to dismiss the car for the sake of a £100 cam belt kit.

And a couple of hours of your time to replace it...

I have been thinking about this all morning, the car is immac and as done only 51k before the cambelt was even considered the guy only wanted £5,500 because he basically is changing to a new car and trade in was much less, he has promised the car is mine either way but if for some reason the dealer faulted (which we both doubt but you never know) and we are not sure at this time, the seller will have a new belt/tensioners etc fitted and sell for the same price, I will pay for a water pump at the same time as it is being fitted to be on the safe side.
Dave.

seems like a fair compromise - just get a reciept and make sure all is done ( no shortcuts) :)
-
The seller has just informed me RV did not change the belt etc because it was under warranty and on the last service they believe it was ok when viewed and should be now. Why they didn't advise the owner puzzles me.
The seller was amazed at this and has offered me the car for £5100 without a cam kit and water pump. I've accepted as i think it's a fair deal.
The repairs will be done as soon as i pick it up. (feel abit dodgy driving it home now)

so that leaves you £400 better off
£100 belt, tensioners
£3 cam belt change dvd
£297 for beer :D
even going to a reputable garage should see you better off (well it would up here) if you are not happy doing it yourself.
-
Sounds like a bargain :)
Sounds like either dealer or seller is lying. The dealer WOULD have suggested a belt change (its the tensioners, not belt that fails anyway), maybe seller didn't want to pay for this.
Buy the £3 cambelt DVD from Robin Hood and see if you think you can tackle it (2.6 is probably the easiest of all the V6 engines to do due to short plenum, no egr to unplug, and no secondary air injection to disconnect.
I'd willingly help, but manx is a bit too far from me I suspect...

My local dealer quoted me £425 all in last year when i had the same done on the car i have at the moment.. can't have gone up that much so... i'll leave it with my dealer coz I'm rubbish at fixing) Instead I'll sit in the pub while they are doing it, won't have as much to spend on the beer but i know the car will run when i get it back...lol.
AA offer extra warranty for approx £65 I might consider it for peace of mind.

trust me, its one of the easier jobs in the engine bay. I reckon Marks_DTM/RMcB could do a 2.6 in 30mins...
(including a tea break ;))

It was the mileage that drew me to the car... but silver was always in my head.

My cambelt was done at 36k / 4 years by Vx, the cost was £315, and since a standard service is around £150-£200 then this job will definitely be noticible in the garage bill if the owner still has them.

Hi, Rv did not fit a new cambelt kit, the last service in july 2006 was completed under the last warranty, according to them it was ok and didn't need doing... still at that time the car had covered more than 40k so i'm sure they should have advised the original owner of the 40k rule. (maybe RVdidnot want to spend money).
As it stands I am having the work done next week with my local Vx dealer, i will also include a new water pump , I will persue this matter further with RV in the meantime.

If you are buying a car with a Vx service history then try going to the dealer and ask at the service desk for a copy of the service history or invoices. If you are lucky they will print off a detailed record of all services, reported faults and their findings, and a full list of parts and materials used.
This only seems to work at a local level, if a car has been through several Vx dealers then you have to try each of them for their bit of the history and I guess that they wont keep old data for too long.

The bit I found annoying is that Vx don't normally give you anything in writing regarding warranty repairs (had my oil cooler replaced under warranty), so when you buy the car second hand and get all the bills from the previous owner you don't really what other work was done during the first 3-years that is not on the bills.
