Title: Another thing about Timbuk's car . . .
Post by: theolodian on 28 September 2006, 11:22:42
When we took the belt off it did start, but only with a lot of blipping the throttle.  Idle is not very smooth either.  The really strange thing was a noise from the plenum like the hollow hiss you get when filling up an air tank.  If you pinched off the hose to the idle valve then the noise went away, but the car didn't run any differently.  The throttle bodies have a thick layer of sludge on the bottom.  We're going to clean them, but is there anything else we should look at?

Sounds like an air leak, if you pinch off the idle valve air supply you would expect it to stall or surge when you released it again.

Once the throttles have been cleaned, check that the stop adjust results in them being fully closed, I have seen two now where the throttle stop has been in-correctly adjusted to stop engine stall.

OK, cheers!  Wouldn't have known.  We'll try to clean the idle valve too, make sure that isn't stuck wide open.

This is a time when you need to clean the entire breather system (reference Mr Mcb's guide).

Everything will clean up well, (remember you should be able to blow through the breather pipes) just take your time and use plenty of carb cleaner/paraffin.

We came across a similar thing with James V6CDX's car.
Thoroughly cleaning the whole system resulted in smoother running, better throttle response and noticably improved MPG! :)

On a side issue. I have deleted posts on here as they were off topic.
Please can we keep the help threads on topic?

Thanks

Dave. :)

Does that mean that people want plenum o-rings?

TB, 2 cambelts and my cam covers, although with the rain prediction my cam covers look iffy.

If they're gonna need replacing, then I guess I'm gonna need some  ;)

She's running, was quite difficult to source the V6 belt as marks DTM said it might be. A trip round to Bo Bo's and 4 belts later but i got one, popped it on tonight and off she went. replaced some bulbs so i could do a paperclip test while i was at it. Results as follows. (if i understood correctly)    144,135 and 31 ? Main thing is were running again so i can still take part in the beer festival at the weekend... er, sorry, cambelt party ;)

Too tired to look up codes (I'm sure someone else will), but expect a 31 if engine not running, 144 is immobiliser iirc, can't remember the 135 one...

There's a thread in chat section 'mini cambelt party' - all posts should go there so everyone involved has a single, known place to look...
