My current facelift has this so-called safety feature preventing the autobox selector from being moved out from Park unless the brake pedal is applied (I didn't have it on my 97 Omega - so it must have been introduced at a later stage). Basically it's a switch on the pedal that actuates a solenoid next to the base of gear selector that pulls back a lever to allow the selector to be moved.
Well the thing is that the solenoid makes a clunky metalic noise when I press the brake pedal. I am not sure if it was always like this, I just recently noticed it. Can someone else confirm if their's is also noisy? The reason I am asking is that if the thing is just plain noisy, than I'll live with it (or unplug it and wedge the lever open..), but if it shouldn't be that way then I'll try to get one from the scrappies.

yes mines on a pre facelift - albeit a 2000 model makes a cluncy click noise too ::)

Thanks Markiec - I'll guess I'll just drive with my finder pressed between the solenoid and the lever... a bit painful but it does dump down the noise... ;D

Mine doesn't....

I'll give you a Fiver for your solenoid.... ;)

now i am paranoid...sure its the same thing - unless the brake pedal is pressed you cant change gear selector. Depressing brake makes the noise you described and allows access to gears....... :-/
Mine has always done it, i was concerned initially but seeing as its passed 2 mot`s and it causes no other issues in 2 years i had kind of forgotten about it!! ;D

Introduced 98 model year.
Mine is audiable if in Park, but not otherwise...

Just get a quiet click out of mine, however sometimes it does not engage :-/

Yep, i'm with you Jaime.
Click heard when in park, but silent when any other position is selected. :)
