Title: How do I check Automatic Tranmission Fuid?
Post by: Gwilym on 11 October 2006, 16:50:52
Whilst filling up today I decided to be very thorough and check all my levels of everything!

Petrol - Low (obviously as I went to the garage to fill up)
Coolant - Low (See previous thread on my leak - to be sorted Tuesday)
Oil - Fine

But Then

Auto Tranmission Fluid - after 5 minutes I stopped looking. On my Jeep Cherokee I had a dipstick but I couldn't find one on the MV6. Consulted the handbook and could find no reference to one. Is there one? Is it a viewing window or do I just wait for a warning on the dash!

I know I am showing a great degree of stupidity but HELP ME PLEASE

Its a bit more involved but, not to hard to do.

Checking the auto box fluid level (http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1152783586)

Um. I take it as there is no easy way of checking that it is not a regular thing that needs doing? I don't have a problem with tranmission. I was just being efficient (and incompetent) and thought I would check.

How often do you check / or change yours?

Fluid change every 50K miles and check the level every 20K miles

Funnily enough, I did mine today! I didn'tt fancy lying under a car as heavy as the Omega with it on axle stands and the engine running, so I asked my friendly Mot tester if I could check it on the 4 post ramp. didn't need much fluid at all and was a damn site easier ands safer.  :)

Cheers Jim

I doubt mine has ever been changed.  I really need to find a place that will do it, a couple have said no so far.  Should I have them change or clean the filter?  (149K)  I was going to do the diff too.  What is the suggested interval on that?

As an Omega uses the same gear box as it predecessor which had a dip stick tube on the auto box I wonder if it's possible to fit a dip stick to an Omega! Even my wife's Astra has a dip stick on the auto box!

I must admit, I found it strange that it didn't have a dip stick. Every other auto I've owned has had one!

Cheers Jim

I was quoted about £100 for vx dealer to change the ATF and filter.....that was Masterfit price tho..

Well your in for a shock....its not the same....its a later revision of, even the sump pan is a different shape with a different gasket etc.

The bottom line is that the gearbox 'shouldn't' loose fluid unless there is a leak.........which you would like to think would obvious.

Something i need to do as instinct - and nothing more apart from paranoi tells me something is starting to go amiss with my auto box, rolling back on hills whilst in drive ......fluid level check first.... :(
