Title: Centre Instrument Console Removal
Post by: Rock on 07 October 2006, 13:23:40
Just wondered if anyone could shed some light on the "easy way" to get the walnut effect part of the console out?

My car has had a bracket for a hands free kit fitted to it which i want to remove. The bracket appears to be stuck to the walnut effect part and i think i need to bring it forward slightly so i can slide the bracket off.

This is a link to a picture of it.

Can anyone pleeeeaaaase help??

Would really appreciate the assistance.

Ahhh, nice one, got it! That bar is a sod to find, especially if you've got fingers like Walls Sausages like mine. Blown the last remaining bulb in the process. Very delicate by the seem of things. Now with out taking the screws off of the back to access the clocks, the bulbs I presume pull out / unscrew with pliers? Everything looks so delicate I don't want to create more damage. Are these bulbs pretty much available anywhere or vx parts only. Would be nice to stick something a little brighter in there.  :-/

When old, the bulbs blow easily. Bulbs are just push and turn 90 degrees type, and accessible once centre console removed (screw into back of climate unit, which comes off with console)

If you're careful, 4 long thin nails make a usable radio removal tool...

Ok, i have been down to halfords and bought a pair of double din removal tools but am having difficulty getting the stereo out.

When i push the tools into the holes there doesn't seem to feel like anywhere for them to push against. The set of holes on the right hand side actually allowed me to push the tool all the way in as far as it would go.

Can anyone give me any indication as to what i'm feeling for? I feel so stupid for asking  :-[ cos it all sounds so simple, but i've literally spent the last half an hour fiddling with it.

There may be some allen grub screws in the holes, ensure these are removed.

Then gently push in until you feel them 'click'

Then pull the keys outwards and towards you to free it...

When I replaced the head unit in mine it was difficult to remove  [smiley=angry.gif](though it was non original), actually bent the removal tools getting it out  [smiley=embarassed.gif], so gradually give it a bit of brute force and it should shift in the end [smiley=thumbsup.gif]. But if it breaks its not my faut [smiley=engel017.gif]

looks like it's the same bracket I have fitted to my facelift. It just wedges in between the two halves of the console and is secured in place to the walnut part with a double-sided sticky pad (albeit fairly strong!!). It can be removed by firmly wiggling it up and down until the seal on the adhesive breaks, then it will pull out ... you don't remove the centre console panel when fitting the bracket ...

for confirmation, the bracket I bought is here (http://www.caraudioplus.co.uk/Vauxhall_Omega_%2800_on%29_Console_Mount_Bracket)

Real-life story, a couple of weeks ago:

Got the Halfords removal pins.

Undid the allen screws, plugged-in the Halfords pins all the way through.

No click.

Pulled the pins, they come out without the setreo.

Tried again.

And again.

And again.

Still no click.

Tried to assist the Halfords pins and prise the stereo off with a screw driver, the facia comes off but the unit itself won't budge.

Gave up after 1 hour of this.

Put allen screws back.

Got a beer.

Haven't tried it again since.

Sorry I can't help  :(

I've removed my head unit a couple of times (NCDC2013) - but did notice that the spring clips which lock the unit in place were only fitted on the bottom of the unit - the top holes are just there to locate the keys in I guess !!!

Tools only go in about 1/2 an inch, much more than that and it's too far ... at that point it's worth pulling them out (towards you) slowly whilst pulling them outwards, which may help the tool to engage on the notch on the clip ... or not ...  ::)

As you insert the pins push them in whilst trying to push the points out towards the sides of the car to ensure the locking tabs get pressed in. When removing pull the loops of the removal pins towards the side of the car so as to ensure they grip better and press the tabs well out of the way.

I dont actualy pull on the pins, I pop my finger in the cassette hole or use a blunt lever to ease it out (dont pull on the front panel though or you will rip it off!) with a bit of wiggling at the same time
