Title: Front brake pad wear sensors
Post by: old cruiser on 18 October 2006, 19:46:59
Had a look at the brakes recently and noticed only one wear sensor fitted on the nearside only, no evidence of any wiring' plug for offside, anyone else noticed this on the facelift model.
Cheers Pete

I seem to remember that my facelift has two, but there was only one (nearside) on the pre-facelift I had before that. I suspect that some garages or owners cut off the connector and seal the end of the wire ...

yep 2 sensors, i thought all megga's had 2 sensors, one each side?

On the side were you cannot see a sensor, it may have been 'fused' and tied up out of the way to shut the MID up.

On my facelift they were both 'fused' because the muppets who maintained the car before me ordered the wrong sensors...

2000 W reg CDX facelift sensors on both sides.
BUT can you guys answer this?

Had my pads and sensors changed 2 weeks ago and as I remember the mechanic had a hard job fitting the sensors into the rivet hole in the pads themselves had to use pliers to force them in.Also different colour sensors - those that came off light grey, new ones dark grey.
TODAY  ;Dmessage comes on screen about pads then goes off again this happened two or three times within about 10 miles as if the sensors are loose.
Is there a specific set of sensors for the facelift model?
Which side of the pad do the sensors fit?  brake material side or flat side that against the calliper or piston.
Taking my car back tomorrow and would welcome your answers about the above

Thanks

Yes, the last set I had seemed a very tight fit. The fit friction side of metal backing plate, in the rivot hole.

seems like there was a change in 2001 to only fit one, another guy I've spoken too also has the facelift on a 2000 same as Tunnies and his has two, so I reckon Vx must have decided to cut costs in 2001 and only fit one, bloody cheapskates!
cheers Pete

Looks like you are correct. Wiring diagrams for 2002 and 2003 show only one sensor - front left....

Bigall - Sounds to me like someone has tried to fit an early set of wear sensors to a later vehicle.

I almost made the same mistake when I replaced my front brakes.  For pre-facelift there are two types of caliper.  ATE and something else I can't rememer (2ltr prior to some mystical date).  The wear sensors are not interchangable!  Black/dark grey for the 2ltr type and light grey/ceramic for the ATE type.

I was sold the wrong type and almost 'forced' them in but luckly I decided to double check.

Unfortunately I've not got any experience of the facelift brakes but my guess (and it is only a guess) is that ATE were used on the facelift as well.

I fitted new brake disc's and pads to mine, were £66+ Vat on TC... when you buy the disc's the pads are included to think of them as a free set  ;)

My braking has been transformed now with the new discs & pads...  :)

Sold as axle sets - so will do both sides of car (either front or rear).  You will need the pad wear sensors as well...
