Title: Main beam bulbs ?
Post by: Glenn on 20 October 2006, 10:45:16
Anyone tried any alternative bulbs to make the main beam appear as bright as the xenon dipped beam ?
Lots of supposedly xenon bulbs available, are they any good ?

Cheers

I use Vaux +50's which seem good (made by Osram I think)

They're probably Osram Silverstars under a different name then - I've got those in main beam and dip, much brighter than standard.

Don't go for "xenon look" bulbs, almost every blue-tinted bulb puts less light on the road, and many are rated at a higher wattage, which you may think means they'd be brighter, but in truth what you get is a bulb that isn't any brighter (because it's painted blue) and runs much hotter, burning out in a tenth of the time and sometimes taking your wiring with it. Same can be true using 80 or 100w normal bulbs, they draw more current and burn out a lot quicker.

Stick to normal colour bulbs, but in a 30% or 50% uprated brightness. By brand name they'd be Osram Silverstar (best ones in my experience), Ring Ultra Xenon and Philips Vision Plus. All much of a muchness, won't get you that HID-look but will make you lights better.

I use Halfords +50's (Ultra Brilliance I think) in the Mazda, big improvement, and noticed they are on bogof at the moment as well.

I got powerbulbs +50%, bogof + a free set of Philips sidelight bulbs. The sidelight bulbs have a blue coating but I'm not too worried about that on sidelights.

I haven't put them in yet but people were saying how good they were on the uk car maintenance group a couple of years ago when they came out.

What bulbs you using? If you're not using the +50 type, I would recommend you try a set in your dipped...

I bought a set of brighter xenon type lamps (standard wattage blue tint) from e-bay - what a load of rubbish >:(
With lights on hi beam they were just about as bright as standard ones on dipped.

'Xenon' halogen bulbs are crap, worse than standard halogens, despite what any seller may try to tell you...

Still, looked quite cool in a blue kind of way.
