Title: MV6/Sport comfort and road noise
Post by: tommoynihan on 05 November 2006, 19:33:53
Can anyone tell me if the MV6/Sport (2.2) with stiffer suspension and larger diameter wheels with lower profile (& wider ?) tyres has a harsher ride, or more importantly, increased road noise (which I particularly can't tolerate).

Thanks

Road noise is about the same (dependent on tyre choice) but, it does have a harsher ride (but still not as bad as pretty much all modern front wheel drive cars!)

I have a prefacelift MV6, and nobody has ever complained its stiff, noisy, or anything like that. Quite the opposite in fact...

If you see one you like, take it for a test ride and see...

Omega suspension can get pretty soft with milleage due to shock wear. I personally don't mind stiff suspension as long as it doesn't create nasty knocks, bangs, rattles etc.

I have 150K on an Elite.  Looks like the front struts are new, but they feel soft to the point of being completely dead.  However, hit a pothole and it sends a massive shock through the car.  I'd be interested it riding in an MV6 someday.  Can't be noticeably worse on the bad stuff, but must be better the rest of the time.

That said, it is still pretty good.  Certainly not convinced it is worth changing anything out.

I noticed a big difference in ride and noise coming off a CDX but got used to it after a bit. Plus I think the MV6 copes with A and B roads a lot better.

The dual rate springs fitted across the range help softly soak up bumps, even on stiffer/lowered chassis.

I swapped my front shocks (had to to pass MOT) and was really surprised by the difference.  Cost just over £100 for a pair of front shocks (Sach).  PM me if you ever want to change them as I can point you to supplier in the Warwickshire area and I've got some kit around that may help

Cheers jonathanh, I'll try to keep that in mind.  I'm pretty sure that I'll be doing wishbones, etc. in the spring and if I have the money I may do the struts or even swap all shocks & springs for MV6.

I think the key phrases here are "stiffer  suspension" and "lower profile"!

Both features usually increase harshness and noise.

Have to agree.

I have driven TB's MV6 on a couple of occasions now, and I must say I was impressed. So much so that if he's selling next summer, i'll buy it off him to drive 6,000 miles around Europe!

The suspension is stiffer, which makes cornering more fun!! Also have less movement from the back when giving it stick.

The MV6 is an excellent blend of smooth ride & excellent handling, but avoid the 2.2 Sport.

2.2 Omega "sport" is a bit of a contradiction in terms!  ;D

Ride on the MV6 is a bit firmer than say an Elite, but the rewards are a car that handles so much better and yet still soaks up much of the imperfections.

As Mark says, tyre noise is down to choice of tyres. Those with a higher silica content tend to be quieter on the road.

If I was choosing, it would be an MV6 (the seats are the best across the range and some of the best in any car!).

Another good point the seats are very comfy and very supportive, especially if your over 6'2

I assume that the Sport is the same as the MV6 but without the V6 !

Is your recommendation to avoid the 2.2 Sport just because the 2.2 in a Omega doesn't make it particulary fast, and therefore not very sporty ?

Omega is heavy car (1.7 tonnes) and 2.2 isn't the most powerful engine ever created. It will cruise nicely, but struggles to pull away quickly.

Also, because you are pushing engine harder all the time, economy often isn't much better than 2.5/2.6 unless you are really gentle with it...

Exactly as Jaime says. :)

The best one to get is a 2.5/2.6 with a manual gearbox. Trim level is personal choice.

This engine with the manual gearbox gives a very good blend of power and economy.

I'd be inclined to agree, although I haven't driven one yet.  Having had mine for less than 2 months, if I knew then what I know now I would have looked for a 2.5/2.6 manual MV6.  However, having said that there only seem to be ex-plod estates for sale with that spec or they are way more than I paid for mine.  I do like my Elite and have no intentions of trading it for an MV6.  If I have the spare money I might put the MV6 suspension in, but right now what bothers me more is that the front seat heaters are dead  >:(

I originally chose the 2.2 before i found this place, and i got the 2.2 for 2 main reasons at the time:

Lower Insurance
Better Fuel Economy

I did have a 2.5 V6 Auto for a while as a project car, and found it thirsty, got 28mpg on a run back from the seller.

I think the best option however is a 2.5 or 2.6 Manual, the Auto's do drink more than the manuals.

Having said that, the 2.2 is not fast. But its no slouch either!

It will sit @ 80 mph all day long, and easily get over 35mpg if all is well under the bonnet.

After cleaning the breathers and having a new exhaust it doesn't hang about.... and to prove that here are the 0-60 figures from parkers.co.uk :

2.2 Manual: 9.5 Sec
2.2 Auto: 10.5 Sec

2.6 Manual: 8.2 Sec
2.6 Auto: 9.2 Sec

3.2 Manual: 7.7 Sec
3.2 Auto: 8.7 Sec

Generally Add 1 second for autos... which means a 2.6 auto is only fractionally quicker to 60 than my 2.2.

Its all goes in circles really, the V6's are defo better engines and very much smoother compared to my 2.2 in dream world i'd have a 3.2 Auto but that would drink to much fuel.

If i was in the market again, i'd get a 2.5/2.6 Facelift but a manual.

The reason i said avoid the 2.2 sport is it should never have been badged a "sport"... the seats, the trim will make it look fast, but it just aint. But on the other hand you get the nice MV6/Sport seats, but with better economy than the V6.

None of that really made sense, ah well!  ;D

Can't you get generic heater pads installed under the leather?  OTOH, how much are MV6 heated leather seats on TC?  :o  Yeah right, that's never gonna happen.

Correct!

Try somewhere like Newtrim in Oxford, they should be able to give a quote, and have a good reputation...
