Driving home yesterday my car broke down! got it towed home by the AA who had a look at it.
Basically what happened was that the pully for the Aux belt tensioner broke up, mangled the Aux belt a good un, and
get this.....
Must have got in behind the cam cover and knocked the timing out to hell.
No compression .. been here before :'( the pistons have been arguing with the valves again!
A real shame as after Mark, Pete, Jaime, Martin & Chris came round and changed the heads it had been running
really well, I managed to get another 3400 miles out of her that were a dream to drive!
I am not going down that road again, I couldn't do it, and would no way ask people for that level of help again.
So bottom line is that this is really the end! It will be stuck on ebay as a non runner potential project. If anyone on here
feels up to the challenge, Robin_hood will have a dvd of how to fix it soon, Make me an offer, but remember it will need to
picked up, it can't be driven. Can supply photos of the current state of the cams, and it would need a new aux belt tensioner and aux belt obviously.
I'll leave it a couple of days before I ebay it in case anyone on here wants it.
Cheers
Merv
PS: anyone spots a 2.6 (02 or 03) MANUAL cdx or better, drop me a PM.
-
Sorry to hear that :( :'(
-
rather hell :'(
Shame, as a nice tidy CDX. :(
Effone was looking at selling his very nice MV6 2.6 manual, and he isn't too far from you. May be worht contacting him if he still wants to sell.
-
Sorry to hear that its happened again, really unlucky.
-
That really is a shame. It was an amazing story that we all thought had a happy ending.
-
Oh no, so sorry to hear it, seems like only yesterday that we hearing all about the work done when at Santa Pod.
-
Oh Shit - nuff said. Sorry to hear your news m8 :-/
-
After all that bloody work, you must be gutted
-
My condolences M8 [smiley=engel017.gif]
-
Ooooh, that definitely qualifies as 'royally sucks'! Many condolences mate. :-[
-
sorry to hear about that, it's not nice when something like that happens.......
Mine gave me prior warning today, for about 5 mins i had a high pitched whine, like a supercharger noise!!!!
Pulled over popped the bonnet and could hear the pulley grinding away.
Local vaux dealer had one in stock, a quick swapover saw it all sorted......
Was amazed how quickly it went from operating normally to failing....
-
Sorry to hear that Merv and they say lightning doesn't strike twice
-
Sorry to hear that m8, as they say in Scotland sair tae bare.
-
What a bugger, so sorry for you Merv.
-
:(
-
Merv that is staggeringly unfortunate! :'(
I am speechless!
-
There must be a demon in that car. I think that it should be exorcised by fire before it spreads! Kinda like my laptop >:(
I still can't believe the bad luck of that happening to you so soon after. :o
-
Cheers guys.
I can only think that the God of VX Dealers was watching and saw that his useless flock was being deprived of money they don't deserve and decided to undo all the work done! Bloody spooky part is that aside from the water pump, this has taken out everything that had been changed!!
-
What a bugger.
Have heard a bit of what happened...any photos or a full description of the damage?
I can only guess that the aux belt snapped half way across, one half kept rotating and the other half split lengthways and worked like a flail on cable tray, hoses etc. I have seen this happen on a washing m/c multi-v belt but not on a car before.
I have heard of one other car where an aux belt snapped and got into the cambelt but looking at the covers you wouldnt think it possible.
Cipher is breaking a 2.5 if anyone fancies doing an engine swap
-
Merv, I'm gutted for you mate, especially after hearing about the rebuild the same day you came to Santa Pod. :'( :'( :'(

I will post some pictures up later, but what appears to have happened is that the pully on the Aux tensioner disintegrated and shredded the belt, inside looked like a pile of black spaghetti had been dropped in the engine bay. When I took off the cam cover (which was perfectly intact) there was a couple of bits of belt inside there. I can only assume that it wandered around the teeth on the cam pullys and let the cam belt slip over the teeth. Annoyingly, to look at the cambelt and tensioners etc, it all looks perfect, just miles out of timing. I cranked it round so cam 1 was at the timing mark and 2 was 4 or 5 teeth out and 3 was 4 out and 4 was 3 out!
If anyone fancies this, let me know, it had just passed the MOT the week after the rebuild and it was going like a dream before that.

So sorry to hear about this - with all the work done you must be really gutted.
-
Sorry to hear of your bad luck, fingers crossed for you and your next car hopefully you will have better luck next time. Its real shame after all the time money and effort put into the car by yourself and others on the forum.

Got to admit that I am gutted, it was running so well.....

I will stick it in the for sale section if anyone fancies a go, failing that it will either be
the scrappies or E-Bay. As a matter of interest, what might I get for it in this state?
Cheers
Merv

sorry top hear of this - it almost sounds unbelievable :-/ :(
-
Merv, What an absolute bummer :(
I know how it feels as I had a V6 volvo that let go after only 400 miles.
Hope you have more luck with the next one
-
Good luck with the next one. They say omega ownership is like marriage but
divorce is so much cheaper.
Good luck. :'(

I was sorry to hear what happened after all the work the guys put in. Out of interest, someone's selling a pair of heads from a 3.0L '95 on fleebay for £160. It ends in about a day. (why not wait until the auction finishes then offer him £100!). Is it not worth one more go?. I mean you know the car now, and its faults. If you buy another you could have a whole load of new faults to go through.
