Title: Fuel Tank Capacity
Post by: jiffle on 05 December 2006, 16:33:35
What is the Fuel Tank capacity of an 2002 Omega.  According to the Users Manual it is 75L, however with the fuel low warning light on, the computer showing a range of 14 miles and fuel used as 61.3  L since the last fill up, I was only able to get 62.3 L in.  So I am assuming that the capacity is actually 65 L which is what it was on my 1998 2.0.

Incidently the figures calculated by the compute are remarkably close to what I obtained using real sums.  As I said 62.3 actual fuel put in 61.3 shown as being used, MPG was 27.2 on the computer and I calculated 26.8.  The dstance travelled on the computer was 367.6 and the odometer (not trip but taking original reading from fill up reading) was 367.6.  Who's an anorak!

Should be 75L for all models, I am not aware that 2.0L have smaller tanks etc.

My trip comp is not veru accurate, I wouldn't relay on the remaining range figure, when the yellow light on the gauge comes-up I fill-up!

Sorry I can't help.

The odometer may have analogue-style revolving digits, but it gets its feed electronically from the same line that feeds the trip comp (i.e. there is no thick rotating metal cable going into the back of the dash!), so they will always show the same....

How come yours is showing in litres on fuel computer ?

All Omegas are 75l tanks.

The distance remaining is not very accurate - I've taken mine way over the 0 miles range a few times now...  ...they can be calibrated a little via Tech2, but its not worth the effort.

Somone, cant remember who, told me that when the range is showing 0 miles there is actually about 10 litres left in the tank. This is to avoid the fuel filter being clogged or cr@p getting into injection system.
I dont know how true that is but then again I dont know much at all. :(

I always thought it was 65L cos that's the most I've got in - even on my 2000 GLS that had no trip computer.  No wonder MPG so low carrying £10 of extra fuel around all the time.

When mine reads 0 miles to go, its normally around 67l to fill.  I have put in 70l before  :-[

Carrying £10 of extra fuel around will not affect the MPG - or rather it will once at the beginning...

Too brave!  I thought I was cutting it fine on the motorway testing the warning light to flashing prompt before I bailed out.
I've also read somewhere you can calibrate with 10K? resistor/s as well, you're right again not worth it.

I'm surprised you run it that low - I know you have one of the cleanest engines but isn't there a risk to the filters?

It's the other way around - emptying the tank makes sure that dirt does not accumulate in it, instead it is being trapped in the filters over time. If you always fill-up when the tank is half-empty, then the first time your tank goes low you risk a massive dirt blockage in the fuel system. Let it run dry (well, almost...), then fill it up.

At £5 or £6 a pop, who cares about filters ;)

I (honestly) forget to look at fuel, and have run out in most vehicles I've owned, a some that I didn't own  :-[

I always thought it was 75l. My mid is a lot better on the predicted mileage since TB reprogrammed it but I've not got down low enough on fuel since to see how good the predicted mileage is. Might fill the can up and test my nerves someday.

Dont know if I agree with that Markjay. Lets say you've got say, a teaspoonful of 'bits' in your tank. The fuller the tank, the more the bits are 'diluted' in the petrol. Surely, the lower the level drops, the more concentrated the mixture would be? Yes? No?

Well guys, I DID run out in my V6, a couple of days ago!! The odometer was reading 465 miles when I ran out, which I worked out to be just under 30mpg. Thankfully I had a can of fuel, but it was a bit of a bitch to start while the new fuel/old crap/air got outta the system!!

I have managed to get over 70l in my tank before too...

I don't agree with keeping half a tank at all times. I believe in using fresh fuel - it deterioirates. Especialy if you buy tesco crap like me :D

I would recommend filling up as soon as the red light pops on.

I've had over 25 miles with MID reading 0 miles.

I agree about the fresh fuel.  I always fill up at the same garage - new tanks & pumps & always busy.
Filled an Astra up years ago with Q8 at a off the beat garage - plugs sooted within days.

 ;D ;D

How can you miss the dash needle, dash light on, then blinking, and the MID also saying Range and flashing!!!  ;D ;D

Although i generally go one the miles rather than the gauge... i generally get around 420 out of tank... so i judge all journeys on that.

Quite easily...  :-[

I've thought about rigging up the steering wheel airbag to go off and punch me in face if it gets too low....

I do tho often run outa lpg......but that doesnt matter as it just switches to petrol  ;)

if you run half full all the time you have to drag around all the extra weight for half a tank which probably equates to having a small passenger in the car all the time. I tend to run down till the fuel light comes on then stick £10 to £20 worth in, I only ever fill up if I am going on a long run and intend to use it.

...if I take out all the stuff from my boot I'll be some 20kg lighter...  ;D

Not to mention a diet   :(

You must be on first name terms then with the garage!  ;) You must have a spare sender unit on the shelf waiting to go in for when yours goes t*ts up too!

Probably go to the garage twice a month. Once had a fiat with a faulty fuel sender, was obviously filled to the same point all the time by a previous owner. Used to work till just below half full and then went to zero.

£10 - £20 a month!? I wish I only needed to spend that much on petrol.
I use a tank full a week!  :(
