Hi guys,
Just got a new job and was told i'd have an astra van but held out for a large estate car. Thinking along lines of late omega 2.5td or Vectra td.
2 questions really,
1:- Is it true that the inline 6 BMW td does not have a timing belt but a chain and what do i need to look for with this engine.
2:- Anyone know the earliest model of vectra that the new 3.0v6 TD was fitted to. Not sure if they'll runn to cost of one of these but may be able to twist their arms. Is this engine any good. it certainly seems to have good bhp/torque figures.
Ive currently got a V6 2.5 petrol and love it but will be up for sale if all goes well with job!!!
Thanks for any help

Welcome Wazza :)
The BMW diesel is chain driven. Fuel pump problems are hugely expensive. Not the worlds strongest engine, not particularly economical (better on long runs), and pretty gutless unless chipped. I'm sure other diesel members will be along shortly with their views :)
Dunno anything about Veccy diesels, sorry.

Well, from a taxation point, the astra van is much better...
3.0V6TD will be murderous on tax!
TheBoy covered the comments on the diesel quite well.
Oh and welcome. :)

Hi,
I've got the 2.5TD BMW, and for me it's fine - but if you're after power it's the wrong car.
I do around 80-100 miles a day on motorway and get around 40mpg (according to the computer). If I'm really delicate then I can push that up to 42, but if I'm heavy footed, drive over 70mph (I mean - who would do such a thing...) then I'm down around 32-35.
Economy drops off quickly as you push it. Starting up first thing and mine sounds a bit rough (but that's diesels I guess), once warm it's pretty smooth as diesels go.
There seems reasonable torque in the engine, but nothing to write home about - I tow a bit and it seems fine with that, but again the economy is wasted as the car tends to spend more time 'on-boost' above 2.5k as you haul along. (My trailer is a small box trailer weighing in at less than 700kg).
Press the 'Sport' button (I think all the 2.5TD's were autos - someone else will probably know) and it's rapid enough, but don't expect to be powersliding or lighting the wheels up in just about anything except wet conditions. Hell - it weighs nearly 2 tonne - why anyone would want to try and drive it near the handling limits is beyond me, it's a big car, and feels like it. It's no nimble GTi - but a great way to eat up the motorway miles in comfort.
Haven't taxed mine yet (due next month) but reading about the CO2 output then it's going to be fairly hefty bill - even more so if we get more 'green' taxes in the future...
I'm told the waterpump is a particularly weak spot on the engine, but I've not had any big problems yet ('98 saloon). Only thing I'm worried with at the moment is wishbones (every Omega suffers) and possibly a Thermostat (but I'm hoping it's a temp. sensor). I've replaced the radiator on mine and that was fairly pricey as they go.
Oil Changes!! Every 5000 miles on the 2.5TD is recommended by VX, and by most other people I've spoken to.
Well, there's my 2p... :)

As an absolute maximum - I would half that to 2.5 - 3k....

Nobody spotted the problem here then....
Late Omega.....2.5TD......the 2.5TD stopped in approx 2000.....then it was 2.2DTi only.
As for the 3.0V6 diesel, its an Isuzu power plant and hence pretty bomb proof.
