Just driving round town 30 mph and car pulls to left harshly as if the road has dropped away - then its back to normal. Wheel drops down a small pot hole and away we go again. Motorway driving AOK and no loss of feel in the corners. The best wat to describe it it that the front wheels feel loose sometimes?
What would or could cause this? (FYI tyres new this year, pressures at 30 PSI all round) :-?

assuming nothing really obvious amiss or strange noises, what kind of wheels/tyres? ive got wide low-profiles and they tramline a lot

Standard fit 225/55/16's shod with Pirelli P7's. Slow lane on M6 locally has tramlines from the HGV's melting onto the tar in the summer and the feeling is very similar, but inconsistent. I've had the car 3 years and it hasn't and isn't always like this.

No they've been on for 6m and were the same as I had on previously.

This is all down to the bacon gag isn't it ;D

Usual things to check - wishbone bushes, track rod ends, steering idler, wheel bearings etc...

Usual to you TB but still a foreign language to me. I'm assuming it will get worse and was just looking for a steer ( bad pun ) on where to let the garage start first when it does.

Jack it up, look for play, thats the best way - it could be any of these components causing it...

As someone on this forum recently said, if you own an Omega you will at sometime experience a vagueness with the steering and a strange sensation of tramlining (following gooves in the road).
As The Boy said there are a standard list of things to check.
I'd say top of the list is wishbone bushes. Sometimes not that obvious to spot either. On mine I think one front one has gone a bit soft (some kind of tear I can't see) and one rear has torn a bit but I can see that when the car is jacked up.
The result is that the front wheels can wander a little (but you can't feel play when you jack up the roadwheel and pull it about).
Shot wishbone bushes can cause a pull to the left or right, a wobble when braking. They also tend to result in wear on the inner edge of the front tyres as the wheels splay out a little under forward motion.
About a zillion wishbone suppliers on Ebay (which to me suggests how common the problem is). Prices start at about £18 each. The genuine Vx price is £180 each. I'd suggest trying a reputable make, my last set were cheap but only lasted 8,000 miles. Having said that I've just ordered some cheap ones again, but these are QH.

Not sure about for VXs, but I've used QH stuff on rovers, and it's been good stuff....
I can't believe wishbones would only last 8k miles.............. even if cheap!! They must have been awful....

Or incorrectly fitted, ie torqued up with car still jacked up...

Hang on... they were very carefully torqued up, and angle tightened, with the wheels on the ground.
Anyway one of the bushes that has failed was a vertical one.....
The quality didn't seem great, but they looked OK.

Sorry, not specifically talking in your case :-[, just in general, if not torqued up with car on ground, this can cause premature bush failure :y
