Title: EGR adjustment?
Post by: DmcL on 16 August 2006, 19:23:17
is the EGR on the 2.5 v6 adjustable? i believe mine is off or stuck. i have fettled with an EGR before on a zetec fezzy i had ages ago so i have a little bit of knowledge on the subject. one thing i do not know is, if it is indeed adjustable which way is to open and which is to close... my theore is the less hot gas recirculated the better as i am on a mission for cheap power at the moment before the more costly modifications and as they say "every little helps"

Its not adjustable, but, can be blanked off which helps to improve the responsiveness of the engine slightly.

Remember, 3.0 cams are what you realy want on a 2.5!

will it not idle a bit ropey with the egr blanked off tho? on the wee fezzy i had if you tried to adjust it to the point of being closed off it would idle like cow dung or even stall. already planning a set of 3.0 cams but also wanting to know about the egr as it raises intake temperatures, and im quite the fan of lowering intake temp by as much as humanly possible for the most power possibly from a good home made intake... i mean to the point of even wrapping most of the tubing up to the pllenum in heat barrier. done all this before on the wee fezzer and by george did it make an improvement over the "norm" cone filter setup that takes in bags of hot air. i actually swear by it...

The EGR is closed at idle (if its working properly that is) if it were open at idle it would run like a bag of shite.
The EGR is there to reduce combustion temperature by introducing a controlled amount of inert gas to the mixture to reduce NOX.
It will not effect performance - i have only blanked mine off as they tend to leak through the none replaceable gasket at the base.

The blanked EGR will theortically increase the engine efficiency and performance at part throttle as it will reduce air intake temperature, it won't make any difference at full throttle. Also during egr operation the timing is slightly advanced to compensate for the delay in flame propagation in the cylinder, something that will give you slightly better consumption figures. The only negative side is that by blanking off the egr you introduce some extra pumping loss in the engine but it is not very significant usually.

Just a question on blanking off the egr, as the fuelling etc is set up for when egr opens the extra fuel needed and timing changes to the flame front etc. would it not cause long term damage to the expensive cats for a small gain in power. also would police roadside emission checks not pick this up. NOX kills people by damaging the lung tissue which is why deisel manufacturers are constantly trying to reduce them. as deisels produce much higher NOX compared to petrol almost double i believe, thats why DPF's are now introduced on modern deisels,
Its a bit of a green issue but you could not stand in a car park with deisels running with out harmful effects apart from the smell but you could with a garage full of '92 year on cars with petrol engines and cats fitted So should you or shouldn't block off the EGR.

Just another bit to add to familymans question

If your on LPG i guess it should be fine to block off the EGR as the Emissions are sooo low with LPG anyway.

But would you get any other Problems ?

No, the emissions in reality are closed loop controled thanks to the lambda sensors plus, the NOx levels are still acceptable, its only certain territories that require its fitment (i.e. California).

As already stated, at idle, the EGR valve is shut (and at full throttle), it only operates during cruising.....

Police roadside emission checks cant detect it and neither can the MOT checks (not tested but, some analysers are capable of reading it) as the amount thrown out the back is still very small.
