Hello,
I have a weird problem with my omega, every time I put the car in gear and select for example drive as soon as I put on the headlight's the orange led that let you know witch gear that you are in go's out and as soon as you switch of the headlights the orange led lights up again.
Any Idea's

Not seen that one....wil check the schematic tonight.

Cheers Mate, Yesterday at the Jocular omega's meet there was another omega a 2000 2.0 cd facelift estate driven by another Jim he also had the same problem!!!!
-
Yep and I'm eagerly waiting to hear what the problem is too ;D Sounds like we're not alone Jim as someone else has posted the same fault on another thread!
Cheers Jim.

Gents,
I check mine out as I was travelling back up the road last night, after our discussions yesterday. ;)
The brightness is controlled by the same roller that dims the dash cluster, just below the lights switch.
Not sure if this helps any but you never know.

Hopefully some kind person will give us the answer :y

Hi Jim, I posted the very same inquiry yesterday. It,s bugging me as it can only be a minor prob. Ihave prised the PRND123 unit out of the consol & inside it looks a bit technical. Printed circuit board & lots of components. Plenty of little bits to short or go t-ts up . It looks like it could also be put in either way round. Might try taking top off & looking a bit closer & turning it round. Let you know what happens. Regards, Big Al

Jim, you're saying that when you turn on the lights, the gear position lamp goes abnormally dim or off?
And no other lights affected?

Hi Big Al, well I tryed fitting another prnd123 selector and it still does the same, it's got me.
Cheers Jim

It goes off. Completely blank. Turn off the lights and on it comes again.
I thought he was taking the piss at first, but sure enough, that's what happens. :-?
** EDIT ** I would have looked at the schematic myself, but as Jim's took his own Haynes manual back i can't help. ;)

Hi Hillper,
when we turn on the lights the led indicator goes out completely.
Cheers, (the other) Jim :)

Need to type a wee bit faster there Jim. ;)

Very strange....the christmas tree light array has a feed to it for dimmed lighting, its on pin 7 and is Grey/Yellow in colour.
Also, are the number plate lights working and is F26 ok?
-
just thought I'd mention, it turns out my old car is now doing exactly the same thing ... have told Mumsie to try turning up the instrument panel dimmer switch and see what effect that has.
I do have the Haynes book of lies here, but the circuit diagram is a bit of a PITA to follow as you have to keep flicking backwards and forwards through the pages all the time ... but it appears that the selector display (U6) has three feeds:
- one (pin 7 - grey/yellow) from the illumination light dimmer
- another (pin 6 - grey/green) from sidelight setting on headlight switch - fed via F26 - which also feeds the number plate light, heater nozzle lights and a buzzer for the auto transmission (???) - so it'd be worth checkng the number plate and heater lights - plus F26 (10 amp)
- the last (pin 5 - black) from ignition feed - it would appear that the snow mode light is NOT affected by the dimmer switch - again check if this is lit?
don't know if this helps much, but it would appear F26 and the number plate / heater nozzle lights are next on the list of things to check!

hmmm ... just tried pulling F26 on mine, then turning on ignition and sidelights - number plate light not lit, but gear selector indicator is. So it's unlikely to be that, as the number plate light works fine when F26 is replaced.
Adjusting the instrument panel illumination dimmer made the LEDs glow less brightly - but not go out completely. Are the rest of the dashboard and climate control lights working? (I assume so ....)

Every other light works it's just the gear selector that goes out as soon as you turn on the headlights, turn them of again and the selector light come's on :-/

hmm ... odd ... I'll pore over the cryptic diagram more closely tomorrow and try to decipher a bit more !!!
funny that my old car's got the exact same problem though ...

I'll get a look at this when you're up the road at the weekend Jim. I've had some further thoughts on it and there's a few things i'd like to check out with the "Fluke". ;)

I thought a word like 'Fluke' woul be one of the banned ones.....

Jim, I'll live with mine until Kev or someone else had fathomed out the problem, I hate trying to find electrical faults ;)
Sounds2k, I know my number plate lights are working as the car was just mot'd and had the fault then. I've also checked every fuse was the right size, present and correct. I've always done this when I get a new car, goes back to finding a bolt in place of a glass fuse many years ago :o
Cheers Jim
-
dunno about this one - all fine on mine......btw i have a spare selector here known to work so Kev/ Jim if you want to check it out to see if it makes a difference give me a yell...... ;)
-
I had a play with mine in the dark tonight (maybe should rephrase that ;D) Anyway, I noticed that if I selected any gear before putting the lights on, the led indicator stayed lit. As soon as I changed into another position on the selector or tried to dim the dash lights, the led goes out and stays out. Weirder by the minute ::)
Cheers Jim
-
sounds more and more like a problem with the chip that drives the LEDs - whether it's on the board with the LEDs on or part of the gearbox ECU though is another matter. Could well just be a dry joint or loose connection somewhere, but good luck finding it ;)

I'm back down south at the mo, and back in Glasgow at the weekend so hopefully Kev can sort it out.
I'II keep you posted.

Hi Jim, did Kev have any joy with your selector lights? I've noticed with mine that if I put the light switch on quickly, the selector goes out, turn it slowly and it stays in!!! Still goes out after you select a different gear tho.... ::)
Cheers Jim

has there been any progress on this? AFAIK my old one still has this same issue, will be down there at xmas though so can have a look whilst I'm there ...
-
an update on this at last ... yes it's the same problem - selection illuminated fine until side or headlights switched on, then only the backlight is on. Switch off lights, selected gear lights up again.
Swapped the display module with that from my 3.0 (a known good part) and the fault followed the display module, so I left them swapped. Hmmm ... now I just need to replace mine :'(
There is some logic circuitry on the back of the circuit board, I'm guessing some of that might be shot ...

I have one that does the same thing. The one that's in the car now varies which light it'll light up, sometimes its D other times D won't light but 3/2/1 will. :-?

don't rule out selector switch if its lighting up wrong leds...

Could very well be, but while the car is selecting the right gear it's not worth getting dirty for! ;)
