Im looking to buy one of these to go to uni and back in as im doing around 250miles a week which in my callibra is costing me around £60 in petrol, so the MPG doesnt work out to great really , what is the average mpg of the 2.5td I looked on parkers and it says 30 MPG which im not sure about ::) thanks in adavance matt.
-
I don't have one, but seems to be quite good on long motorway runs (40mpg is probably achievable), but very poor around town (ie low/mid 20s). So 30 as a combined is probably not far off.
Hopefully a tractor owner will be along shortly with their experiences...
-
And no doubt Martin Imber will be along in a while saying get a v6 and do lpg conversion ;)
-
2.5TD will, on average, do 25mpg round town and 40ish on longer runs.
Personally I'd have a manual 2.5 V6, driven sensibly will give 35mpg on longer runs and 20mpg round town.
-
Im looking at a manual 2.5td but if there isnt that much differnce between a 2.5 v6 and the td then ill go for one of those they seem to be cheeper as well which suits me fine how much are these LPG conversions ive allways been interested in getting one since it effictivley doubles the fuel economy

My Omega (3.0 MV6 manual) is dual-fuel, if you have a filling station near by that sells it then I'd consider it a way better solution than a diesel. Loads more power (210 BHP vs 130), much smoother, more fun as it revs to 6,750 RPM, and almost certainly cheaper on fuel. My trip computer is showing around 27 MPG average, that's over the last few months since it was last reset. Take into account that propane is less than half the price of diesel (we'll be conservative and say half price), you'd need to average 54 MPG in your diesel to get the same economy cost-wise. Not gonna happen!
Admittedly the economy is a bit higher than normal cos my dad's been using it for the last month or so as I've been using my BMW (I live in the city and only have one parking space, so whatever car I'm not using gets left at my folks' house) so it tends to be driven a little more sedately than I would, although my dad certainly doesn't drive like miss daisy so it will be wound up now and then. Even then the lowest I've seen the average MPG display is around 23-24, still loads cheaper than a diesel.
Your best bet in my opinion is to look for one pre-converted. They're only a little more expensive than standard V6s, which is a huge saving over buying a V6 and converting it yourself. Just make sure you give it a good test drive to ensure it drives and idles well on both petrol and gas. A good installation will be barely noticable when driving, it should feel just like running on petrol (a very slight power loss is normal).
Good luck!

Get a V6 and LPG convert it, £1800 to get it done about £800 for the kit and DIY.
I thrash mine a bit and do a lot of short runs so get 16mpg on gas but 17mpg on petrol.
On a run it is substantially better.
16-17 on gas towing a caravan at road speeds
THat said mine does run a little lean so could do with some fine tuning, I will get it checked in January as the chap (Bernard) who certified it lives near work.

PS I only got low 20s from a 2.0!!!!

That's cos you have to cane the tits off it all the time, even when you're not driving fast! The 2.0 Audi I used to use as a runaround before I bought the Omega was barely more economical than the Omega is, despite the much smaller engine and lighter weight. Reason being that I was constantly revving it to at least 4,000 RPM (if not 6,000!) before changing up a gear, just to get the damn thing to move, damn gutless engine :O.
Small engines in a big car is a false economy, as you have to work it much harder which kills the economy and makes it frustrating to drive.

I just dont know where you lot get your figures from!!!!!
My manual TD estate averages just under 30mpg towing a twin axle caravan!!!
and thats taken over 5300 miles around spain and france, on its own round town it gets about 32, 33, mainly cos i cant keep off the loud pedal ;D on a recent trip to nottingham at very high speeds it averaged 47mpg, now i know mine is chipped but, even before chipping it i was easily getting over 550 miles to a tankful of diesel!!! however as far as im concerned you can all keep knocking them cos that makes them cheaper to buy!!!
as for performance, I have a couple of other MODS on the engine,And in this weather its EASY to get wheelspin in third gear, must find a LSD!!!

From what I've heard, yours is a bit 'special' :)
Hope to see it in the flesh in the not too distant future....

Its a lot quicker than i expected, and silky smooth for a derv...

Up to 450 miles to a tankful of propane at a cost of ~£30, along with 210 BHP and a reasonably nice soundtrack from the engine. I know which I'd take ;)
Saying that I'm happy to go around in my BMW which does 18 MPG on a good day, but it's worth it for that wonderful V8 noise and the 315 BHP. Can't see me going to diesel any time soon, they're getting better in the latest models (BMW 335d with 6-speed manual box looks like a hoot) but still sound nothing remotely sporty and don't thrive on revs at all. Peak torque at 2,000 RPM is all well and good if you can't be bothered changing gear but it's not much for for enthusiasts.

I have owned a 2.5TD for 3.5 yrs & recorded every deop of fuel put in
Around town I get 27.5 mpg
The best on a long run (albeit with a heavy load of PA equipment) was 35 mpg
If anyone knows how to improve on fuel economy I'll be pleased to hear.

Well, I'd be disappointed with 20mpg around town. I've never got it to drop below 28 in my manual 2.5 V6. It's no sprinter so I just lay off the power try to be as smooth as I can and save the juice. (o.k. some of you may say that this means driving like grandad!) It seems to me a small price to pay for a motorway cruiser which is where I do most of my miles
-
I should add - mine's an Auto
-
I've had mine around 6 months and get around 29/30mpg around town. I get a fairly solid 40mpg on the motorway (where I do most my miles - 90 miles a day, at least). If I'm particularly delicate with the throttle then it'll creep above 40, but not too much.
-
Lots to consider really, the main reason for getting one is the 60 mile round trip i do to uni 3 days a week and the 40 mile roundtrip i do the other 4 days to go to work, most of it is motorway around 250miles, ive got a budget of 1200 for the car and then I could stretch to another 600-800 in january to spend on it what do you guys think i should and could get with that kinda money ?
-
if you can reach 2k then, either the 2.5 TD Omega in Manual form... as you will get much better mpg. You can also chip it, Omegatoy can get you one at a very reasonable price.
He got 30mpg with a fully laiden car and caravan!! i suspect a chipped manual TD can get 45mpg + fairly easily. An old user here called McBurger registered 47mpg on the fuel comp once with his 2.5 TD.
You other option is to go LPG, which uni are you at?? I am at Brunel and I living in Brackley, there is an LPG station here and there are several around my uni so if I had a V6 i would be tempted.
You could get yourself a nice 3.0 V6, and then get it LPG'd. The big V6's can do mid 30's on the motorway, little less running on gas, so 50mpg from a 3.0V6 is easily done ;D
Since your doing motorway miles, the Omega is the best way to go. Thats why I got mine, so smooth and comfy blew my old Mondeo into the weeds in terms of comfort. It still has to be beaten, i have no driven another car yet where i feel as comfy as in the Omega :y

Don't be fooled by all the eBay claims of 37 mpg etc etc from a V6
"mid 30's" from my 3.0 is more like a gallon & a half. My journey to work of 20 miles is on A & B roads with a very short run on the motorway. My trip is on 23. When I worked 30 miles away it was virtually all motorway and travelling at around 80mph I was getting anout 26/7mpg. Don't buy a V6 for any kind of economy.
-
If I drive as if I'm a coffin-dodger I get about 36 to a gallon on a run in my manual 2.5v6, and mid 20s around town - and bear in mind that I live in a nice hilly area! When pulling a caravan you can expect about 25 to a gallon realistically, but then you're not gonna be wanting to do that often so who cares??? - My excuse was that I was travelloing to Silverstone, by the way!
You should also take into account the price of the thing in the first place too - good petrol omegas are always a lot cheeper than the rattiest diesels. It can take quite some time before you see a saving overall. Oh, and they smell a bit too - don't believe all that guff about modern diesels being as good as petrols, they're not, by a long way. Thats my opinion and I'm sticking with it!

2.5TD Elite('94) Auto, with 215k on the clock. The worst fuel consumption I've seen was an average of 26mpg. That was after a week of "nose to tail" city driving over christmas week.
There is a product called "TUNIT", which took 15mins fit and half an hour of trial and error with the "little brass screw" (which is the only adjustment req'd). This increases the power by 30BHP (approx).
If you find a web site (search under TUNIT DIESEL TUNING), one of the FAQ's is "Will it improve fuel consumption ? The answer they give is "Once you've stopped showing off the power increase to your mates you should get 10% overall.
The only down side is my car is an automatic and 3rd gear was a little worn. The power increase was too much for it and...I now have a new autobox !!
Basically, hitting the "Loud" pedal at 40mph on a damp road and the wheels just spin. Cost at the time was about £220, but that was about 3 years ago.
