Exhaust is blocked I suspect.......either the passenger side cat or centre section

No, it has no way of telling that there is a blockage.

I suspect that what is happening is that the exhaust gases are traveling through the air injection pipe to the drivers side manifold and the pipe is getting dam hot.....it blows out the first rubber pipe as this is hotter then the other (the gases will have cooled as they travel across the front of the engine).

If you tap the cat does it rattle?

What was the failure that caused the engine to need changing?

Well, if its been burning oil then the exhaust system is likely to be suspect, cats can be got for about 50 quid a pair second hand (they rarely fail)......

Indeed I have and given the state the breathers were in and the massive crankcase pressure as a result....I would say it would have burnt some oil..

As a test, remove the cat on the passenger side and try blowing through it.....then do the same with the centre section....that way you cna proove the theory before commiting to the required parts
