Title: Project Insurance
Post by: Jimbob on 11 September 2007, 12:10:13
What do you lot do with regards to insuring project cars?

Use dayinsure for when it needs moving?
Insure as another car in your family?
dont bother (but then what about test drives etc?)
Trade insurance (don't know how that works)

Cheers

I may just be tempted for a car to fix to learn on, that I can leave as I don't need it day to day.

Once mine was nearly ready to go on the road i insured it in its own right but on a limited mileage policy so the premium was less.

do it Jimbob, i learnt quite a few things on project cars.

To get the Elite LPG back i put it on day insure.com, its gone up now, but still only £12.60 per day.

Its been un-insured for a few weeks now, but since its nearly in a moving state again, gone for insurance.

Check if your policy covers you to drive uninsured cars, that way your safe to drive. but it will be un-insured on your driveway.... depends how safe your area is.

Cheers all, esp Tunnie....
Got me thinking....

I'm with Direct Line, and have cover to drive ANYONE elses care, with their permission.
no mention in the policy if THEY have to be insuring the car or not....

So I rang them up.

Providing I DONT own the car, I can drive it under my policy, whether or not the owner has insurance covering it.

So, as long as I get Mrs Jimbob to 'own' the car, I can drive it quite happily (and Legally) :)
Obviously only 3rd party though.

Thats got me thinking, 1 hell of a loophole...

Assuming All I want is to drive legally & cheaply and 3rd party only...

I and wife, each buy a 1 litre 10 year old fiesta and store em somewhere
Each insure em, on a policy which lets us drive any other persons car 3rd party
I buy ME the the meega of HER choice
she buys HER the meega of MY choice.

We both drive around (in 'each others' cars) , 3rd party insured for £dirt cheap!

nice idea that!  :y

Make Sense on Omega's as they are worth sod all anyway so full comp insurance is not always needed!

Down side is that if the car is damaged in a carpark without you in it, you will not be covered. Same if its nicked off the driveway...

However............. >:(

You are only notionally insured in this other vehicle whilst your backside is in the drivers seat.  As soon as you step out and stand on the public road, it is uninsured and Plod can deal with owner causing or permitting uninsured car to be on a public road.

£200 and 6 points, please, you are now halfway to a ban....   ;)

Take care....... :-X

I agree...

Also, I thought the insurance only covers you to drive someone elses car, if they also hold insurance for that car?

....meaning you're only safe to get out of your car if you park it on private land...?

Thought there would have to be a down side.

But the legalities of getting the car home and test driven are enough.

Now i've seen the car....

W reg CDX facelift saloon, dark blue, cloth, all in all quite tidy, 150000 miles

For the price I expected some sort of mechanical issue, but think the price of £1000 is just down to the mileage.

...may be hard to move it on at much more than that in my opinion, simply based on what SWMBO got hers for..

Thats about what we were thinking, even dropped down a few hundred.

However she is maybe tempted as a keeper and sell hers so she can join the v6 club

May ring up and talk, they have not tried very hard to sell as its not even cleaned up, so may come down a bit.
Plus the old cambelt words etc can knock some more off.

Insurance is a real pain in the ass when you're buying a car privately, often it's on a Sunday and the car can be some distance away so going back to collect later isn't really an option. Phone them up beforehand -- "Can I add this car to my insurance for a day?"; usually the answer is no because it's not registered to you. WTF difference does that make in all reality for one day's use? Then they tell you to ask the owner to add you to their insurance, which is great until you actually buy the car at which point their insurance becomes void as they no longer own the car!

It's no wonder we have such a problem with uninsured drivers, they make it so bloody difficult at times when you're offering them your money making every effort to comply with the law.
