Title: Mothballing a motor
Post by: Tony H on 10 September 2007, 21:49:31
Hi everyone, my son is off to uni in a couple of weeks and is taking his car off the road. what the best way to lay it up? I'll be charging the battery now and again and airing it out, but is it better to run the engine occasionally or just leave it, Ideally it would be better used but the insurance runs out soon so thats out of the question, that said it will be left on a private car park about half the size of a football pitch so it could be driven around that if keeping it running is the best option. if I dont run it is it a good idea to press the brake and clutch pedal now and again to keep them free?

I'd keep it running, and keep it moving...

Some advice here :

http://www.theaa.com/motoring_advice/laying_up.html

http://www.oldclassiccar.co.uk/classic_car_layup.htm

http://www.rac.co.uk/web/knowhow/owning_a_car/maintenance/laying_up_a_car

some of it contradictory !!  A google on "laying up a car" gets even more !!!

I think that short runs around the car park will not provide any real benefit, but may just generate a bit more condensation in the systems.  There is a good guide on the aa website, and there are probably others as well

Clean all mud off

Wheels off - store them in a dark garage, failing that pump them up to tyre maximum if left on.

Plugs out - 50cc or so of oil in holes - manualy turn over to smear it on the bores.

bags over brakes keep the weather off.

Trickle charge battery every week or so leave it in the garage.

That should help
