Title: 5th Gear safety thing
Post by: Martin_1962 on 11 September 2007, 21:36:14
WHo was surprised at the Volvo losing?

I was shocked - I though the small car would have been toast/

I wonder how an Omega would have fared?

I drew the conclusion that new cars are more dangerous. The implication was that the little car came off better because of the damage it did to the Volvo.

Did I read it right?  :-?

Little car saved the occupants from significant damage.  Volve didnt have airbags and no across the face crumple zone so full impact was through the drivers side and into the drivers footwell.

Little car spread impact across entire face of car, bags deployed, doors opened and driver/passengers walked away.

I think it would have been a more even match with an Omega but only as far as the airbags.  Crumple zones would still play a significant part......   :-/

Hmm rather surprising that. Having driven a few volvos in the past I always considered them to be veritable tanks. Especially after my dad wrote a similar sized car off and left his 240 with no more than a broken headlight and wing damage.
Looks like the old big car advantage isn't as relevant as was thought in a crash.
As they say you live and learn.
