Title: Why do we like them??
Post by: AlanV2 on 10 September 2007, 23:09:50
I got to thinking today (I had 2 minutes at work to let my mind drift), what is it about the Omega that we all like so much, you have the Pre-facelift, Facelift and the Estates, so there is a difference, but then they are all the same (if you get my drift).

So come on, what is it?

O.K they have their downsides but you get an awful lot of "bang for your bucks"especially in Elite form and spares are cheap when you compare them with the cars that they were pitched against namely Beemers and Mercs they are cheap to run :y

I went out three and a half years ago determined to buy an Omega. I had remembered a tv show with Quentin Wilson who waxed lyrical about what good value they were as a second hand buy.

Three and a half years later, I really can't imagine owning another car. Luxury (I know I only have a CD), Size, Comfort, Autobox, Rear Wheel Drive, Good Looks and Great Value For Money. Where else could I get so much car for so little money?

We've got 2.

Big, Comfy, Fast, Feel Safe, Great Load luggers, Loads of room for child seats, esp with a 6ft driver!
Also 'a bit different'  most the family cars these days seem to be Zafira's etc, Meegas can be more practical :)
And so cheap for what they are.  Not quite so cheap to run as they do like to drink the fuel, insurance not to bad though.

I was asked this yesterday at work....my answer was big, powerful, well equipped, relatively reliable and the depreciation has been someone elses problem  ;)

I think that they have a presents in the road and have a look as if to say DON,T THINK ABOUT IT. They are also very nice place to be it. Loved them from when i was at school. I had not seen anything like it before.   :)

Agree - im using the estate this week, therefore my Black MV6 is behind our wrought Iron gates at home - its sitting nose towards the gates and frankly it looks like a caged beast  8-)....

RANT = ON

Well I don't like mine at the moment! be happier when

a) I get the remaining two wheel bolts drilled off
b) I sort out the rather emissions lamp coming on when there's nothing wrong with the CAT's (probably sensors now)

RANT = OFF

VXL

I have that  happen to mine as well eml on for a few days and off for weeks.Had it check on Tech told that it is a heater malfuction on the 2nd  02  sensor of the 1st bank just after the cat. This was repalced by a non vaux 02 sensor and is still putting the eml on sometimes. I think i will have to get a Vaux one on the next time it happens. :-[  cost is £98 per senser.
Car runs fine and the emissions are good to had them checked at the same time.

hope this may be of some help

Cheers for that, interesting that we've both got 3.2's with possibly the same problem, (my current thinking is that one of the sensors is fine most of the time but is getting stuck occasionally??? Trouble is that the codes relate to both sides..........) What sort of mileage was yours when the problem started...?

Thanks

Always wanted a V6. I bought a Cavalier V6 which had a few problems, so sold it on ASAP. Managed to find a manual 2.5V6 Omega with 74000 miles for £450. I had never even been in an Omega before this. I was astounded at what I got for my money in comparison to the Cavalier.
Not regretted the Omega ever.

I confessed this to Broocie a few months back and feel I should share. I had the Omega for 6 months before I realised it was rear wheel drive  :-[ It wasn't until I lost traction one day when coming from a junction and I noticed it was the rear wheels that spun.

Never liked Vauxhall and after owning a cavalier i was adamant id never own another Vauxhall that's until my boss showed me his Omega (just a 2.0 GLS) and from that moment on i wanted one (actually i bought his eventually) so found a cheapish 2.0 on Ebay and drove down to Reigate to get it (that's a far trip from Huntington) and nearly wet myself when i first drove it as it felt huge compared to the sierra saloon"s id driven previously. ;D

Then after the first 2.0 developed a very rattly engine i bought my bosses 2.0 saloon....then the 3.0 Elite and finally a 2.5 Estate, still drive the Elite and so far spent sod all on it apart from a couple of rear tyres and a couple of bits second hand for the climate and touch wood its been fine.

Couldn't imagine driving anything else now....big comfy car and cheap to buy. :y

i like the luxury and value for money, i like the modern look of my facelift, i like the cheap enough insurance of a group 13+ car, i like the jag-like smoothness even on 17" wheels, and i also like the rareness of the omega

two people drive past each other in astras, they dont bat an eye, but 2 omegas pass and the drivers cant help but look across

I could not agree more!

Suppose I should leave a comment myself.

I originally had a Carlton (it got squished by the local council), then when I came to buy my next car I found a 2.5 Elite and fell in love, back last december she saved my life after I got out and walked away from a 5 car 70 mph crash on the A80.

(£6k's worth of damage if anyone is intrested - who knew an Omega could become that stumpy?)

Got another one with the insurance, although a  2.6 CD this time.

But if it had been a smaller car less well made, it may well have been a different story!

Also like comfort, room/size, V6, style, value for money, Auto box.

Comfort and space.

I bought mine purely to go to South of France nearly 4 yrs ago.  It is so effortless and comfortable (and economical on a trip like that), not tiring like other cars I've had...
