I have a 1997 2.5V6 CDX Auto Estate that wont start. I think the cambelt has gone.
Second engine (after the belt went on the first one). This engine with 8500 miles since recon is supposed to have had a brand new belt and tensioner fitted.
What are the symptoms? Is there a quick self-diagnostic I can do to confirm it before I get someone expensive to look at it?

What happend when you last stopped the car.
Just not starting sounds more like a dodgy sensor, maybe crank.
any horrible noises?

Stopped and parked like normal.
No horrible noises, but it seems to turn too easily. ? no compression.
Last time the belt went I did have lots of clattering, but that engine was stripped for me and EVERYTHING had been smashed; pistons, big & little ends; heads valves guides - a complete total mess.
Fuel supply seems ok - but its clearly not even trying to ignite anything in there.

Undo the two bolts holding the top edge of the cam cover on and ease it back so you can see the belt and get somebody to spin it over....the belt should move.
Next stage after this would be to strip it down and get the cover off to check the timing marks.....

It could be something as simple as a failed crank sensor. The engine turns over absolutely fine but never fires at all. Fingers crossed...
