Loc:Nottingham - UK How to check the auto box fluid level
13. Jul 2006 at 10:39 This is the method which I use and find it works quite well. (note pic, to follow).
First, the gearbox oil needs to be warm, idealy between about 40-80 deg's so take the car for a short run.
Now jack up the drivers side (passenger side if left hand drive) and support on a suitable axle stand. Note, the car needs to be on a fairly flat surface.
Warning: The Catalytic converters get very hot and the level plug is very close to them so be careful!)
Place a suitable container underneath the auto box and locate the oil level plug, slacken it off with a 13mm socket (you could use a spanner but, a socket is easier), dont fully remove it.
Now chock the wheels, ensure the auto box is in park and start the engine.
Carefuly reach under the car, position the container below the level plug and remove the level plug.
Using Dextron 3 ATF top the fluid level up until it just starts to run out, for top ups I buy a 1 litre bottle with the long extandable plastic delivery tube, insert the tube into the level plug and squeeze.
Now, with the engine still running, lower the car off the jack, the excess fluid will run out and into the container.
Jack the car again and refit the level plug with a new washer (if you dont have one then heat it up to re-anneal the old washer before fitting).
Wipe off any oil runs from the gearbox sump and jobs a good un

Also, I find that using one of these 500cc automotive syringes (around a Tenner) can be useful:

I got mine from:

There is also a Sealey product, costing a bit more for some reason:

Oh yes, I remember that picture! The joy of replacing an autobox! >:(
And yes, those syringes are useful. :)

I heard you enjoyed auto boxes so much that you wanted to host a g/box fluid changing day? And you were dying to help do mine ;)

I believe that was Mark (he of the big non staining drive) offered to host this particular event! ;)
Although I would be more than happy to help you do yours mate. :)
Actually I suspect I need to do it on the estate too... :(

I'm sure we can make a date once the Rover is back on the road and the Omega is through its MOT...
I guess we could do both in probably no time at all...

I thought mine needed doing urgently due to rough shifting, but then TB upgraded the firmware and all is well now. :y
I still want to get it done though at some point of time, the car is now reaching 50k. I am still plotting a method of getting all the ATF out including from the Torque Converter - though this makes the ATF change a bit more expensive as I will need 10L of the stuff... not sure why it seems to be only sold in 1L bottles? never seen a 5L contained of ATF etc :(

The motor factor I was in yesterday had Dextron III (Coma I think) 5l bottles, £32 IIRC...

Thanks - I was quoted £7 inc. VAT per 1L bottle by the friendly parts manager at the Vx dealer (they give me standard Trade prices on items which are not on Trade Club), so at £7x5=£35 I think I'll be better off with the Vx stuff... it's still £70 just for the fluid if opting for a complete change.

Actually, it may have been £23, not £32. I seem to recall it was similar to 5 x 1l bottles, and they were a fiver a pop...

I'll double check next time I'm in there - I wasn't really paying attention...

halfords do a 5l dextron 3 bottle for £21, and i think eurocarparts do a similar price.
Although euro car parts told me i would only need 1.2 litres to refill the sump/system after completely draining and refitting the main and intermediate sump, even after i showed them the actual capacity of it (8.4l from dry, 4.4l after refitting main sump)
Am doing mine at the weekend and was thinking of taking some photo's for a guide if anyone thinks it will be useful.
(please dont confuse this with a willingness to do anyone elses for them) ; ;) ;D ::)
