Right, got the day off to do my crank sensor (yes it probably will take that long!)
Is this the crank sensor?
Excuse the phone camera pictures, my girlfriend has taken our proper camera to school.
She's a teacher by the way, I don't go out with a schoolgirl... :o
Cheers!

No, that is the lambda sensor.....and its mounted in the exaust!
To locate the cranks sensor......jack the passenger side of the car up and get under it just behind the passenger wheel near the lambda sensor on the passenger side.
You should be able to see the engine block and the large cylinder which is the oil filter housing.....just rearward of this is the crank sensor.....black plastic item with a single torx bolt in it.
-
I assume that is also the drivers side lambda sensor!
-
Hmmmm, that is the front of my car passenger side I promise!
Will look again though...
-
Is it a mirror image..?
I can see the oil filter
-
It may be you know, had to flip it as I took the picture upside down! Is the sensor right next to the oil filter - almost touching with a silvery coloured sheath over the cable?
-
Thats the bugger...and yes, the pic needs flipping horizontaly...
-
Managed to change it but my car still won't start - I'm gutted :'(
-
Does it start if you give it a small amount of throttle (only a small amount!)
-
No it doesn't I'm afraid...
-
Is there fuel pressure (carefuly undo one of the fuel lines on the left side of the plenum until fuel squirts out to confirm)
-
There is an amount of fuel dripping out when I take it off, do I need to try and start the engine to test properly? I'm on my own so may be a bit difficult if that's what I need to do.
-
It should spray out.....under pressure...even after the engine is stopped...
-
I couldn't accuse it of spraying out, a dribble from each one before stopping really. Does it make a difference that it hasn't been started for a week or should it always be under pressure?
Many thanks.
-
The fuel pump should pressure it within a couple of secs of ign being on...
-
When cranking, the fuel pump should run and it should pressurise...
In the under bonnet fuse box at the back right are two purple relays....are they properly inserted.....can you swap them over....
-
That didn't work either. I did notice though that the 2 small green fuses in there had blown - that may help out with my overheating problem! Not that I have a danger of overheating at the moment :-/
-
Blown.....are the large fuses in the smaller black box above the battery all ok.....
-
No, they appear ok too.
Thanks for your help!
-
Do you know when the fuel filter was last changed...?
Can you get somebody to check for 12V at the fuel pump connector under the inspection cover in the boot whilst you crank the engine....
-
If the service history is all filled in correctly, the last time the fuel filter was changed was almost 30000 miles ago...
I'll have to find someone who knows how to check for 12v and try it, I don't have a multimeter - to be honest it'll probably get to a garage before I try anything else - just hope it's not going to be pricey!
-
Well it's running again, got it towed to a garage and it took them a while to find it, in the end they took the crank sensor out and put it back in again :-[
Don't know how I didn't do it properly as it seemed to be in fine but there we go! Shame it cost me £117 to find out this way but I'm glad I attempted it, made me a lot more confident about working on a car.
Thanks for everyone's help.

crank sensors-easy to replace if you have a car ramp or are the size of a 4year old-i got mine done at a cheap garage.
