I have just seen this on the auto trader site..........
1999 VAUXHALL Omega 2.5 V6 (trade)
63,000 miles
S reg (1999)
S reg. 63000 Miles, FSH, all old MOTs, long MOT, fully loaded with all extras, air con, electric seats etc, only problem head gasket gone, bargain. £595
I have just phoned about this car, and the guy says there is oil in the water.... the head gasket went coming up the motorway. I asked if it will drive thinking i would be able to nurse it home, he then said it will drive but i would say you need a tow truck.
If I go and look at this car, how will i know its the head gasket thats gone?.. i have read on here that its very rare for an Omega head gasket to go!!
If not the head gasket what else could it be? Is this an expensive job to do on Omega's?
Is it hard to do? Done V8 Range Rover but the V8's are quite straight forward....

Oil in water - oil cooler.
Water in oil - headgasket.
£600 is not a bargain IMHO - £800 would get you one already running..

Head Gasket on Omega is a big job... so the seller is not likely to get much for the car if he keep telling buyers that it's gone. Not many people know about the Omega oil cooler weakness...

HG on Omega is not a difficult job... it's just very time consuming......

I disagree.....600 quid is a good price for a 60K mile car .....and only an oil cooler failure to sort (coz its not the head gasket!)
Need to know the spec though.

As DIY, we have no problem with time-consuming jobs, as long as they are straightforward. But in 'garage money' time-consuming means big-job means big-money... if you buy a V6 with blown HG and intend to pay a garage to sort it out, your are looking at a substantial bill compared to the original cost of the car, definitely if you go to Vx it will probably be more than the car cost in the first place... all this is something that anyone selling a car with blown HG is only too well aware of. Again, these are all bargaining points - and remember that even though we are pretty-sure that it's the oil cooler and not the HG, there is always a small chance it's more sinister than that as the car's history is unknown, so the buying price has to reflect the risk element as small as it may be...
