After seeing a couple of mentions of this in the Vectra VXR thread, thought it would be a good idea to start a dedicated Stig thread :)
R McB thinks maybe it's Martin Brundle and I suggested Mark Blundell. We know that the first Stig was Perry McCarthy who was well known in racing circles but not so well known to the public, so it could be that the current Stig is also someone not so well known.
Maybe someone out there knows for sure, so come on lets hear from you ;)
-
I am reliably informed by someone who knows someone on the production team that it is indeed
Perry McCarthy
You read it here first, er second.
-
the above sounds real good and makes me out to be in the know doesnt it......ok i lied :(
i googled this a few months ago.......

He was indeed but he left the show before the last series started. He was the first Stig (black outfit and helmet), but who is the latest Stig in the white outfit?
-
A mate of mine saw him with his visor up while he was road testing a Cateham 7 in or around Knockhill a wee while ago, but couldn't recognise him from the split second view he got.
-
Well quite clearly hes an ex-formula one driver who I suspect has also had some saloon car experience....
Perry Mcarthy was cetainly the Stig Mk 1 and 2 but, I suspect its a different guy in Mk3 stig as he now has a somewhat different and more attacking driving style...
Ok, I admit it.....its me....
-
Could be Jenson Button :)
Just a guess

Mark - you're so unashamedly bashful ::)
-
Perry Mc Carthy was sacked as he told everyone he was the stig in his book, bad move.
There is and always has been more than one stig, depending on the car and availablity of the driver, it has been said various manufacturers send their test drivers with the supercars.
Various GT and touring car drivers have been linked with the job, why else would James Kaye just happen to be on the track to race a Lambo against an FQ400!!
I have a feeling one of the drivers is Tiff Needell, if you watch on 5th gear he wears a large Breitling type watch, sometimes the stig can be seen wearing the same watch

Not so sure....i would think that Jenson Button wouldn't have time for it with all his F1 and sponsorship commitments.
I still think it's more likely to be someone a little less well known who would be able to spare his time to do the Top Gear series
Mind you, what about Anthony Davidson who test drives for the BAR team?
-
Could be Jenson Button :)
Just a guess
Can't be, the stig looks like he could win a race ;D
-
The current one is tall, fairly slim, aggressive driver. My money is on Mansell.

He's obviously very very busy - I never see him walking around Tescos (just over road from BAR/Honda) at lunchtime....
-

Tall and slim is def not a description of Mansell!!
The lines are all wrong for it to be him, when he went out in the reasonably rubbish car he took the wider line in the first bend as favoured by Hill and Webber, the Stig doesnt do that so prob a good assumption its not one of them :)
-

Mansell.......slim!!!?? ;D ;D ;D
-
Could Damon Hill be a possible Stig
Yet another f1 driver to the list.
-

Takes different lines to Mansell

As before the F1 drivers take a different line to the Stig

Another possibility could be ex BTTC driver Anthony Reid as he fits Martin's quote above and probably wouldn't take same lines as an F1 driver. Don't think he's driving in any other series at the moment either.
-
Hes got to be an F1 driver, they dont let any old driver behind the wheel of an F1 car......
-
Allan McNish?
ex F1 DTM etc
and is slim!!

Perhaps he drives different in road cars.
Never know lol ;D

I can assure you it is Martin Brundle. His sister is married to Jeremey Clarkson's brother., who in turn is the bloke who bought my engineering company. Either that or I am just talking total 'dangle berries', you decide.

Any chance of some photographic evidence for confirmation ;D
-
Think on the line of up and comming F1 drivers, could be a line.
-

I dunno about that....I've seen Tiff Needell drive F1 cars before. I think as long as they're competent professional racing drivers they would be allowed in an F1 car.

Anyone gonna argue with R McB? :-/
-
just a technical point - Tiff did drive in F1 in 1980

just asked my brother who works in the motorsport industry and has contacts with F1 suppliers and at prodrive for example(trying to give him credibility here!).
He advises as we suspect that there are a few stigs being used at the moment depending on who is available etc.
what he can confirm is that Mark Webber and Damon Hill HAVE done some stints as the stig
I chuck that one into the ring!

I have just received a fax from BBC TOP GEAR. It reads:
Dear Mr Burger,
Thank you for your enquiry as to the identity of 'The Stig'. This is a question we get asked a lot and as you will appreciate, the hidden identity adds to the mystery and the fun element of the show. If we just tell everyone it is Martin Brundle the secret would be out very quickly. Oh crap. I just told you. Bo**ocks.
Mr Mc Burger, you are the greatest and we really wish you would consider the anchor job at top Gear. Then we could get rid of the bumbling oaf Clarkson. How he won American Idle I'll never know. The trouble we've had. As for that poisoned dwarf Hammond and that long haired public schoolboy twit May, they have nothing on Omega Forum and the great McBurger.
I hope this helps.

But how do you get that passed the old profanity filter?
My "o h b u g g e r" thread is now readin "oh Dearie me" ;D
Edited: as the damned thing did it again!!!

You sure you're not getting mixed up here? Mark Webber and Damon Hill have indeed been on the show, but only as guests and both had a go in the reasonably priced family car. Incidentally, Mansell also had a go in it and caned both of their lap times as I recall.
