Title: Mis-firing 2.0 - todays findings!

I was on nights last night, so didn't wake until 2pm today. Had some time to tinker though.

Removed Aux belt and timing cover. Although the top pulleys appeared to be lined up OK, I was unable to check the bottom, due to some muppet rounding off the torx bolts holding the bottom pulley on :(

So, decide to look at spark plugs. Removed them all. They were all as black as black can be, and were soaked in a thick-ish looking black liquid, my guess being engine oil? The plugs did smell a bit of petrol, but I'm finding it hard to make a judgement to be honest.

This would certainly explain why it's running like a sack of sh!te! But obviously I need to find out what's causing them to foul, before I put a new set of plugs in.

The compression tester arrived today (Cheers Jaime  :y ) And I tried to do a compression test. I was able to get the tester pretty securely into the plug holes, but when I held the throttle open and cranked the engine on the starter, I didn't get any reading at all on the guague. Was I doing something wrong? I tried in pots 1 and 2 and both were the same. No reading I'm sure I had a good seal.

There did feel like there was come compression when I was turning the engine by hand, but thinking about it I've known engines that have been harder to turn.

Any suggestions on what do to as a next step? I couldn't start it today due to the lack of ignition barrel, I'm not sure really how to troubleshoot from here...

You should get some reading as you are cranking, assuming the little button on side is not pressed in?

Also, not that it would make much difference, but I pull the fuel pump fuse, and don't use WOT

It would turn over, possibly even (sort of) run, depending on how many damaged...

I would see if there are othe opinions before writing it off though...

I gave a mate a hand with a C16XE engine swap into a Nova - when started it didn't sound right. It had been sat unused for a couple of months but was running fine before it was removed. The timing belt and tensioners were changed before trying to start it. He subsequently did a compression test - and that showed zero on cylinder 3. If you looked at the valves in situ, they looked fine. It's only when the inlet valves were removed that the fault became obvious ...

we replaced all the valves on that cylinder anyway and it sorted it, needless to say we made sure the timing was right before turning it over for the first time :)

Are the plugs wet with water or petrol? If it's water I'd say head gasket.

seems more like oil than anything else, but I can't be sure

Is it worth lifting the head martin, or shall I just invest the time into robbing the LPG kit?

Oil bothers me - but lack of compression points to rings, head gasket or valves.

I think the oil could be from a) plug change with soaked leads - dribbled in b) leaky HG, c) rings, or d) my favourite - the valve seals!
