Looks to me like the pinion shaft seal, there will be a band of oil across the car where it is thrown by the shaft rotation....looks like some is burnt onto the exhaust.
If it was an o/p seal it tends to just be wet around the seal, it doesnt get thrown as far.

Looks like you need two shocks, that is a MoT fail, unless the oil has come from somewhere else.

It passed the MOT last month with a shock warning advice.

How urgent is the diff?

It will wait till its warmer  ;)

A little bit of oil spreads a long way so I suspect it is still full. If it was dripping and forming a patch on your drive I would be more concerned.

Thanks for you reassurance, no it's not dripping onto the drive.

The diff leak looks worse than it realy is....I suspect you would struggle to tell the level had dropped if you looked.

Surprised at the shock absorbers though!

Considering the car’s low mileage this is very disappointing… :(

I would do the shocks first (as said assuming the leak is indeed from the shock itself), luckily the rear ones are easier than the front ones…

As for the diff, again as said before if it is ‘sweating’ oil and not actually dripping, you should be OK for now, and at any rate it is a very rugged device and will take some beating before any permanent damage is caused… but if you intend to keep the car for the long run, it needs to be tackled at some point of time.

This together with the cam sensor and the airbag light (assuming that the door rust could be attributed to a poor previous repair), does not look very good…

Your’s a 2002, my 2001 car had various items replaced under warranty, including the oil cooler, rocker cover gaskets, alarm sounder, and various other bits…

In comparison, my other half’s Toyota was purchased new in 1997 and did not have a single fault – ever… all we pay is for servicing (and fixing physically broken bits).  :y

So sorry Opel/Vauxhall but as much as we like the Omega this is not good.  :-[

AA - That is exactly where my diff is leaking too!  :(

I have just copied your photo if that's ok just to indicate something on mine:

Where i have put the red circle is where it drips from, after a long run (say 1hr) and I look under the car i see a droplet of the oil at the bottom of the metal braket.

If I leave a plastic tray underneath the car, it will leak about a 5p coins worth, then stop. But it does this after every run  :'(

Btw AA I have fitted discs before, doing my Dads discs & Pads this weekend.... soo if you need them doing I am sure I can fit you in one weekend  :y

I suspect that the car before I had it was used and abused.

It was a Lookers own car, used by their young accountant.

The fact that the front brake pads had to be changed (under NetworkQ warranty) @ 12K tells me something.

They failed to change the discs at the same time which is probably why the discs are worn.

The front tyres needed changing @ 18K and I suspect that they would have been changed sooner if he had still been driving it.

The rear tyres lasted till 38K, but I put that down to my driving, not his.

The car has now done 41K, front pads still OK (29K since the change) and the front tyres still have 7mm of tread (23K since the change).

Who knows what he did to the back end for the shocks and pinion seal to go in such a short time.

But.....as I only paid 10K for a 6 months old car with just under 10K on the clock.....

tunnie, thanks for the offer, I may take you up on that.

Might have a go at the shocks myself, it looks pretty straightforward.

I should have done a how2 long ago when I did my dics and pads on Jaimes driveway, just never got around to it. (Typical student  ;))

This time I'll get my arse in gear and write it while I am doing it.....
