As per title. I've just taken a couple of pictures of my oil filler neck and cap, for opinions.
Is this amount of sludge normal?
Points to note:
I do not do short runs, my car is blasted down a motorway nearly every day.
I am loosing 1 litre of coolant to 300 miles, not sure if related or not.
No visible sludge on the disptick
I have just had a rocker gasket blow and fill the plug wells, could this sludge be breahers blocked?
I'm not overly concerned, just very interested!

Got my suspisions, especially combined with the coolant loss.
Although, none on dipstick, and none I can see in the camshaft area.
-
How quickly did that build up?
Alarm bells would be going off for me if that were my car.
-
Cleaned it out not long ago, after I got back from Brackley..
It always seems to come back pretty rapidly..

Not looking good that pipe, but odd none on the dip stick :-/
The coolant must be going some ware, i'd have to say that's early signs of HG m8 :'(

Admit it doesn't look good... but... could it possibly just be blocked breathers and the current climate?
-
BTW, oil + filter change due, was done about 4.5K ago, with GTX magnatec.
-
when where they last cleaned?
In this current weather mine seams to feel a lot smoother! :o
Cruised down the m25 today @ 90 on a flat section instant comp read 36mpg... and generally stayed in the 30's.
Did the same run in the hot weather last year and it read high 20's although thats before i started maintaining it properly.

The cold air would definately help a car run better, but it's also prime time for condensation...

Breathers and throttle bodies last cleaned 6/7000 miles ago, by Dave and Fin.

I seem to remember GTX can be a bit sludgy........

Yeah, me too. That's why I thought it worth a mention.
I seem to remember that the GTX sludge issue was related to the old Ford overhead valve engines though?
-
ahh GTX thats your problem, get some GM Semi Synth in there :y

I'm probably showing my age....

Funny enough my condensation and mayonaise problems ended from the day i started using very good quality ester based oil rather than VX semi.
-
I wouldn't be too concerned. Seems a while since breather done, so worth redoing them. In this weather, there will be a bit of condensation.
Can you check dipstick after a long journey - with the Rover, it was showing sludge on dipstick immediately after a run, but soon turned to normal oil, as if the water and oil seperated after a few hours...
-
No huge concern with that.....get some decent oil in it though....
-
I agree with what has been said...
1. When I get some mayo in the cap, it is no where near what you have...
2. When the car was new I got the oil changed every 10k (sometimes a little more), and never had sludge like this, so the 4.5k miles by itself does not explain it.. Don't know about GTX though, never used it on the Omega. But like has been said, get some Vx oil in there and see what happens.
3. You are loosing a lot of coolant... you shouldn’t really add any at all. Related or not, this needs to be checked...

Agreed, but time is precious and this car is a shed...
Looking at another Meega tonight, so hopefully I can break this one into lots of little bits......
-
I'd say there does seem to be a little too much sludge, but then it's very cold at the moment.
Could well be nothing to worry about.
-
Did my breathers today, and changed oil (4k old), breather clear, regular (3 - 4k) oil changes, and most recent journeys are a blast to Nottingham (160 miles round trip) and a trip to work (50 miles round trip). A fair bit of condesation apparent at filler...
-
if you take a look at the V6 engine oil guide in the maint section, you will see a pic of my filler cap following a series of long runs. I would not worry about the sludge too much, but the coolant loss is more of an isue......
