I have gathered up most of the bits for my latest project after nearly completing the boot lock mod, but before I proceed wondered if anyone has any further comments or suggestions.
I have purchased one of those aftermarket electric car heaters, and some heat resistant ducting etc. And I have a prototype design for a control system.
The idea is, that hot air from the after market heater is ducted into a cut out in the "firewall" in front of the pollen filter. Two thermistors monitor the air, at this point and the ambient temperature. Also the power to the heater is limited to take into account the restriction in air flow through the ducting and to prevent the temperature from becoming dangerously high.
The fan assembly is to be mounted in waterproofing within the engine bay.
When you start the car, if the monitored temperature is under say 15 deg C, hot air is injected into the heating system, the CC must be set to manual as it wont operate until coolant comes up to temperature in auto, the result is instant assisted heating, helping to clear windows and heat feet, the electric heater automatically switches off after say 5 minutes, or a possible development would be a further thermistor monitoring coolant, possibly strapped to a coolant pipe.
The thermistor monitoring the air temperature for the heater will also shut down the heater if it gets to hot. No danger of starting fire should exist, as the air temperature entering from the ducting will be insufficient to ignite anything (paper air filter) or melt anything (plastic housing etc).

That seems like a lot of time/effort/money for not much in return Jamie :o

I like the idea of instant heat as soon as you jump in and turn the key, but really its not that expensive, the heater is around £15.00 and the rest of it I make myself. :)
BTW the practice of starting a car and allowing it to warm up at idle, accelerates engine wear considerably, even with modern synthetic oils.

You can get proper fuel heaters that circulate and heat the coolant...

I know, but I like a challenge :) and its instant heat, similar idea to some late model executive cars.
