Any course fisherman on the forum tonight
If so I have a question

Not me, I'm a kayaker and we're not allowed to mix with fisherman. We are the scurge of the river and frighten off the slamon with our little plastic boats :'(

Well, i do hell of a lot on the river Lugg in Mordiford near Hereford.
Anyway, I use a carbon 13 foot rod, I have the chance of a 1962 cane rod, its in good condition, just needs some new eyes, Question is, have you had any expierience with cane rods.

Similar to a sheep, less legs, a lot less hair,quite a bit slippier and the (w)hole is a lot smaller....... ;)

I know, the only expierience I have with cane was when I was at school, 6 across the hand, :'( :'(

I could never see the attraction with vintage gear. If you like losing fish and tackle then I suppose it's OK but what's the point?
In my opinion, modern gear has been designed to make fishing easier. Rod tips are more responsive so bites are easier to see, actions are more progressive so that it's easier to keep the fish on and finally they are not prone to rotting and take little care.
The most skillful bit of fishing, in my opinion, is choosing and working the swim properly and getting the best possible bait presentation. Neither of these will be aided with a split cane rod.
If you would prefer a Morris Minor to a V6 CDX then I suppose a split cane rod and a centre pin reel are for you, otherwise I'd stick with your decent gear. They do look nice on the pub wall though (Fishing Rods, not Morris Minors).

Old fashioned "split cane" rods used to be the "Rolls Royces" of rods in the 60's / 70's .. before nylon & fibreglass became the cheaper/better options. A good cane rod, well looked after is strong, flexible and extremely sensitive. That's the problem down here. If you mention fishing they instantly think you mean sea fishing. Apart from that there are a few 'stew ponds' for the tourists but nothing in terms of real fishing. Having said that, parts of the River Camel are well known to be good salmon beats but I can't afford that sort of thing.

River wye has some good salmon runs, its £1500 for the licence then the owner charges
£70.00 per day to fish. >:(

Each to their own I suppose, could say the same for golf,cricket, mrs Miggy always says what do I see in football, and pubs, cannot remember half the time.
Its alright I aint a P....ss head, its just rugby season.

I used to be a very competitive person and I mean to the point of obsession. Fishing was the only thing I found that I didn't have to win at. In fact, I could sit there for hours without doing anything and have an excuse for not doing it.
So, for me it is total relaxation and the chance that the next cast will bring a record fish. ::)
Bugger!!!! Thats that competitive streak straining to get out. :-[

I once went fishing on the River Eden in Carlisle. Chopsdad could probably confirm this but I think you can fish on a local day ticket on some of the town stretches and there are salmon there. I saw a chap catch two big salmon whilst I was there. :)

I used to fish on the Tweed at Coldstream when I was in my teens, remember it well, anyway, we never got charged as my farther was very good friends with the landloard of the swan inn. Plus as I am now, he was an ex coldstream guard so he used to get a few privilages if staying in the village.
