Hello,
I am in the process of cleaning the breather system following the guide on here. The problem is that I cannot figure out what is meant by the small (brass) pipe. I have the 3 pipes going into the chamber but the only brass pipe I can see is not small and goes into the EGR valve which is bolted over the right hand bank. Does anyone have any pics as the ones thatwere on there dont show up anymore. Its prob just me being a mong on this but I want to do the job right.
Also while I have the cam covers off I was considering getting some 3.0 cams for that extra little boost when the right foot gets heavy. Does anyone know where I can get them from and how much? I saw somewhere advertised for around £350 but I wonder if some used ones would be cheaper. Any sources around here?

£100 - £150 should get you some 3.0l cams - they hold price well as good upgrade on 2.5
The breathers. The guide is not the best due to missing images,
Basically, 4 pipes at back of plastic EcoTec cover - 2 outside ones go into one? Follow this back to breather box on drivers side and clean this pipe thoroughly. On of the smaller pipes also goes to this same box, clean this one as well. At breather box end, gently clean out the small hold in the breather box with a pin, but do not insert too far as it may cause damage. Spray loads of carb cleaner into the plastic EcoTec bit, also clean the throttle bodies.....

Also I see you have a v6 cam locking kit for loan. I have just got me a cambelt set with tensioner pulleys etc - good price btw (£84 from Camberley Auto Factors) Would I be able to borrow the kit from you. I will pay all postage and a contribution to wear and tear :D

Forgive my density but I've read all the threads concerning CLEANING THE BREATHERS and the one in the MAINENANCE GUIDELINES there is a mention of pictures but I don't see any nor can I find any links. Are they posted somewhere else? If not, couls someone please post them or email them to me. I had the valve cover gaskets replaced but don't know if the breathers were cleaned. My American sources tell me the the Catera doesn't have breathers but not knowing what they look like or where they are, I can't verify it. I seriously doubt it's true considering our government's emissions requirements. Please help me find them so I can clean them and avoid replacing the gaskets again.

Right, standard 2.6/3.2 that we all know and love :)
See the black plastic bit on middle of plenum - it has a logo on it? This is a thin cover, flick off (just the cover, not the whole plastic bit, to reveal a screw. Remove this screw, and the 2 you can see on the plastic leading to throttle body. Mark and remove the 4 rubber pipes at back of this plastic bit, then remove the plastic bit and thoroughly clean in with carb cleaner.
Those 4 pipes you removed? The 2 outside ones join and go off to a 'breather box' behind left bank (looking from front) - passenger side for you boys who drive on wrong side ;). Remove this rubber pipe, and clean with carb cleaner.
One of the little rubber pipes also goes to this breather box, clean this as well. Where it enters breather box, there is a tiny hole. Make sure this is clear - but don't insert a pin too far.
Remove the throttle bodies, and clean with carb cleaner.
Refit is reverse method, renewing any gaskets that are past their best.

My engine. Brake fluid is on my to do list. I'm looking for a pair of 2004 GTO/Monaro front brake calipers to replace my Catera's originals. It's part of my brake upgrade including stainless steel braided hoses and ceramic pads. Thought I'd change the fluid then but if the calipers don't turn up soon I'll be changing the brake fluid first.

Mine is a 3.0 but I'm sure they're close enough. Thanks for the clarification. I can't do the work right now though. It's -10*C outside and my flesh would stick to the tools. Then I'd just have to clean bloody residue off the breathers in addition to the mayo.

I said 2.6/3.2 as no throttle cable or EGR (which exist on our 3.0l). On closer inspection it does have SAI like our 3.0l...
So a few differences between our 3.0l and US ones...
Mechanically similar though :y

Damn good upgrade on the 2.5 (even better with the MTek chip) and these are excellent cams. :)

Monaro not that common here. Are the brakes much better?
According to my American sources the 2004 Pontiac GTO front brake calipers are a direct bolt-on. The 2005 and later calipers won't fit. The advantages are less unsprung weight and dual pistons for greater clamping power. I suspect the Holden/Vauxhall Monaro shares them but I can't confirm. The Catera's front discs are the same diameter and thickness as the GTO's. Below is a link to Yahoo's Catera Forum where the GTO brakes are discussed, and the only decent pictures I could find of the Catera and GTO calipers.
