Post by: 2.2dti on 08 February 2007, 22:40:37
Hi All,

New to this I have had a bit of a browse fround the site so I dont ask a silly question that has already been dealt with elsewhere...I can only see references to retrofitting cruise cont on auto cars...

Can I retrofit cruise control on my '02 plate 2.2dti manual?? I had cruise control on my '98 vec GSI manual so I know vaux do it but did they ever do it on the manual omega?? also can you retrofit traction control to these beasts??

Many thanks to anyboy with any info for me !! :)

Cruise yes (stalk needed, possibly clutch switch (look for it) and a chat with a tech2).  I believe its the 4 wire stalk reqd for dti, but would have to check.

TC, no.

You are unlikely to have a clutch switch fitted (£22 from dealer) as TB says have a nosey around to see if you have it fitted.

When you are there, check if you have 4 way brake switch, I think you need one of those as well (although my knowledge of the 2.2dti is very limited).  The only way of checking is pulling the multiplug off and checking that you have 4 terminals.

Generally, it seems the 2.2 petrols had the clutch switch, 2.6/3.2 don't.  All facelifts I've seen have 4 pin brake switch...

It will be interesting to see if the clutch switch is on the 2.2dti as standard.  I didn't know about the 4 pin switch on the facelifts!

I think its 2 wires for diesels, I know I always confuse them. Picked up a stalk for my dads 2.2 petrol and it has 4 wires.

Thanks for all the replies!! :)

I will get my head under the dash at the weekend and have a look to see if I have the clutch switch and if I have the 4 wire brake switch fitted...other than that if I just get a stalk and the clutch switch if I need it is it really that simple or do I need some tech 2 electronical jiggery pokery done as well?? :-/

I don't ;)

So its only the BMW 2.5 TD which had the 2 wire version?

Yup, rest are all Vauxhall engines, so same stalk...

DBW use the brake signal as a fail over for idle (sort of)

Basically if the throttle pot goes wrong brake will shut off the throttle

Once you've fitted the stalk etc. you will need to get it on the tech2 machine (a few kind words to one of the technicians down at your local VX garage and might do it for the price of a drink as they did at my local one) all it does is to enable cruise as the software itself is already there.
Cheers Pete

Yep.  It cost me 5 beer tokens after a freindly chat with a mechanic 'round the back'.

I've heard that oil burners have cruise enabled from factory.  May be one of many urban myths.

No urban myth! The BMW 2.5's all seam to be enabled. No experience with the 2.2 DTi's

Well, it'll be interesting to see if 2.2dti's cruise is, in fact enabled, as suspected.

Keep us posted 2.2dti.

The 2.5TD tractors do not have the setting, so always enabled. The 2.2 diesel ECUs do have the setting, and generally not enabled...

Just to clarify I was browsing ebay to see about these stalks do I need a 4 wire one??

many thanks...my thinking is that if I buy the stalk then I will have to make time to do something with it!! :)

Yes, 4 wire stalk for 2.2tdi, and it will likely need enabling via tech2
