I have started to reliably get a whistling screeching sound on start up. It lasts about 30 seconds to a minute - about the same time before something cuts in or a valve opens up( it has always done that since we had the car). Then the car settles down to normal running. All this is before setting off. I can make it worse by switching the air con on or lights or setting off.
First thing I looked for is a belt that looks as though it is loose - like fan/alternator belts in the olden days. The long ridged belt that seems to drive everything looks OK when I poked it. i.e. didn't have any obvious play but maybe just needs some simple adjustment. The car had new cam belt at 120K two and a half years ago.
My guess and it is only a guess is a dry bearing on something. It is still the original water pump after 130K plus mileage.
Any suggestions please?! It is a 2.5 V6 97'.

Secondary air injection pump - mounted under bumper on passenger side (UK). Unplug it, its not important.

TB is probably right......but as you say you can make it worse by switching lights on or aircon.....this makes me think the aux belt is slipping.....extra load on it.
Ive come across this several times......the belt is damp and screeches until it dries out....worth looking at if TB's advice doesnt fix it :y

My screeching turned out to be the tensioner (aux belt) bearings shot - still not quite fixed yet, but close ;)
