No, not the foxes outside in the dead of night, it came from the car this morning on the way to work.
Got to between 4-5K RPM, up a dual carriageway on a hill, doing between 70-80 MPH and heard an almighty screech that lasted a couple of seconds then vanished.. I pulled over as soon as I could but could see nothing, its no noisier at idle than normal.. I revved it up a bit and when it got into the higher rev ranges it started to make a low whistling noise that I've never noticed before...
Oddly from this point on (about 5 mins till I got to work) it seemed a lot quicker...
Any ideas? As you know both my tensioners have been replaced, along with the other cambelt roller, and new belts all round..
I'm hoping its just a one off...

Pump was done, by a/c I take it you mean the air con pump thats on the aux belt?

Yeah. Air con pump, air con clutch, air con clutch bearings, etc.

I'll have to have a good look later on, is it something thats prone to going wrong?
Edit: And what are the chances of it seizing altogether?! And causing serious probs..

Just started it up, and got my head under the bonnet - looks like I messed up the cam cover gaskets :'( I knew I didn't put enough of that f**king sealent on. Argh - there goes my weekend...
Oil running from top front of drivers side gasket, into the alternator - top job :(

You don't actually need much sealant. The cover may be bad.
If your a/c clutch seizes, it can destroy the pump. When that happens the car won't start b/c the seized pump/clutch combo keeps it from turning over fast enough. Then you get a belt for a car without a/c. Better to catch it before the pump goes bad, a lot cheaper to fix, although the pump may go soon after . . .

If the oil from the cam cover is running on to your alternator, it seems logical that's where the screeching is coming from (maybe drive belt slipping), or poosibly oil inside the alternator. Whichever it is, you'll need to give everything a good clean and, if the aux belt is soaked in oil, replace it :(

Agreed, it must be quite a gap.. should have been fine, especially as drivers side wasn't leaking before I changed the gasket :-[ I know where I did put sealent, and I know where I didn't - guess where its leaking from.. This is why I'm leaning towards whacking the sealant all the way around later on when I get home and redo the whole damn job..

Well I've now had a REALLY good look at lunchtime, there is oil everywhere!! No wonder its squealing! Tonight I'm going to rip it to bits and clean it properly - any reccomendations on degreasing the aux belt + the things it drives? I.e. what to use?

Chuck the belt and get a can or two of water-soluable spray degreaser.

Well I've now had a REALLY good look at lunchtime, there is oil everywhere!! No wonder its squealing! Tonight I'm going to rip it to bits and clean it properly - any reccomendations on degreasing the aux belt + the things it drives? I.e. what to use?
