Title: T,T,T,T,T,T,T
Post by: dtnorth on 12 March 2007, 19:36:35
Hi,

Started up the old cludge this morning, and I got a T,T,T,T,T,T  sound from the engine when running cold.

Once it heated up the noise went away. Coould this be tappets or piston issues?

Depends if it's a light tapping or a heavier knock. Could also be an exhaust manifold gasket on the way out and blowinf when cold.

I guess have a listen under the bonnet and see where it's coming from. Sometimes a short length of hose held to your ear and used like a stethoscope on the engine can be a help.

Definitely a light tapping...  Coming from the cylinder head area, however, only if I rev slightly on a cold engine.....

Does the noise increase proportionatly with engine revs? if so it sounds like cam followers

Thats it exactly......    What do I need to fix that....?   Apart from an overpriced garage...

If it goes away when the engine's warm it's probably not worth losing too much sleep over at this stage. When was the oil last changed?
It might be worth giving it a flush with some Wynns followed by an oil and filter change.

If it disappears when it warms up, it could be exhaust manifold gasket, or the manifold itself....

I'm with TheBoy. Sounds like exhaust manifold (gasket hopefully).

Could be either.. neither are too serious or will do long term damage

Personal preference: don't use flushing agents, just a good few oil changes...

My engine does the same when cold. Found one of the exhaust manifold studs sheared off at the block.
Local VX dealer said that the studs are different from the 2.0 ltr to 2.2 ltr.

Waiting for the weather to get warm up here before starting the job. Once the engine is hot noise disappears. Is it a known problem with the cast manifold cracking? Mine has a small crack between 2 ans 3 cylinders at the top. When i get the manifold off to change the stud i am going to weld, using a high carbon rod, the crack.

Notice it's a 2.2 4 pot, it couldn't be the air injection pump thingy could it?  My mate had one go and it sounded like this, quite rattley sounded OK when warm, sorry can't be any more specific, didn't get into it too much.

Maybe others know more..

that tends to be a whine noise...

Agreed - this is exactly what I always do.
