The electronis in my key fob are knackered and I don't have a spare. I have seen second hand ones on ebay. My question is this..... If I bought a second hand one, could it be recoded to my car or will I have to buy a new one???

Yes you could buy a 2nd hand fob but it would need recoding with a Tech I/II

Whats broken....is it just the battery holder come away from the PCB......if so, easy fix.

If buying secondhand be certain that the fob is made by the same manufacturer as your original (name on rear of fob) I think there are 2 types - someone will come along soon with the names
Auto keysmiths can supply a fob and code it for you at a reasonable price (Carpass may be needed) think I got one for about £40ish - quite a bit cheaper than Vxall

Right, you can either attempt a repair, using new switches/rubber from a replacement fob. Easy enough if you are OK with a soldering iron.
Or replace fob, but will need coding to your car with a Tech2 device, and this will need the immobiliser PIN code which you can get off your carpass (carpass is £12 to £40 depending on your dealer). If you take this route, the replacement fob must be same manufacturer as old one (Delphi or Bosch for the 3 button facelifts - not seen a Megamos one yet).

I suffered with neither of my fobs staying programmed for more than a couple of tries
Acting on advice in this commendable web-site, I resoldered the battery connectors to the pcb & magic, I once again have remote locking!
Seems that the fobs are prone to dry joints (not the smoking kind) which can cause the problem, so give the above fix a try
(If anyone wants their fob resoldered I'm happy to do it, e-mail me off line (I live near Basingstoke - cultural capital of the UK)

Pretty much all cars suffer the same problem, and all the button pressing tends to either knacker the switch itself, or flexes the pcb slightly causing the (rather naff) solder joints to fail...

It's the solder joint on one side of the unlock button that's gone on mine. It would probably resolder on, but not by me..... I am crap at soldering and would only make it worse. :'( :'(

my facelift has a 3-button remote made by megamos ... it's an early facelift though ('W' plate)
I found another common problem is that the switches are of a bad design - you have a plastic base, a bit of spring metal inside which makes the connection with another bit of metal on top of it, then the rubbery part - and a clip-on metal bit which fits over the top and clips onto the sides of the plastic switch body. What happens over time is that if the buttons is pressed too hard, the metal clip-on cover bends in the middle, eventually it no longer stays in place and the switch comes apart. Catch it early enough and it can be bent back into shape and the switch re-assembled before the bits inside go missing ... had this on a 52-reg "courtesy" car too (1.0 corsa ... ugh!)

Thanks for the offer mark, it's very kind of you. Unfortunatly It's my only key. That's why I'm panicing a bit. Should realy invest in a spare anyway!!! ::) ::)
Also, if I use the key manualy.... the car locks ok, and unlocks ok, but the alarm goes off aswell when I open the door. Is this normal???

There must be someone near you who can re-solder it for you; anyone who does eletronic repair e.g. televison repair shop, auto electrical, car radio installation?

Yes, normal...
I'm sure Marks_DTM could turn it round fairly quickly, so if you don't mind alarm going off for a few days every time you get in (or disconnect alarm horns ;)), just send fob off to him....
