Title: Aircon
Post by: Gaffers on 06 April 2007, 08:30:17
Hi,

Just tried my aircon yesterday, not very cold at all.  I am thinking about trying one of those refills you can get from halfrauds.

Has anyone tried these, do they work?

Cheers as always,

Get it done properly, and have the dye put in...

Do not use one of the cans from Halfords.  Whilst I don't doubt that the Halfords can will improve the air con slightly, you really should go to an air con specialist (or garage that deals with air con) who should do the following:

1.  Check for leaks.  If all is found to be well, then the following is done
2.  Evacuate the system - suck all the refrigerant (gas) well, the gas that remains anyway out of the system
3.  Fit a new received / dryer
4.  Vac the system (suck out all air and moisture) for at least 2 - 3 hours
5.  Fill the system with new gas along with the specified lubricant for the compressor and a leak detection dye.

After this, it is important to run the system for at least 10 minutes every couple of weeks or so.  This keeps the system active and stops the various seals drying out.  Every year, get the system checked and every two years have the receiver / dryer replaced.

Hope this helps

Vacing the system for 2-3 hours is excessive....30mins plus will do....

Plus there is no need for stage 2......as stage 4 covers this nicely....

The reason why you vac it for so long is because under such a vaccum, water boils at ambient temp.......so it gets all the moisture out.....but 3 hours is a bit much...
