Title: How much to sort handbrake

ok so i've been looking at the how to's and teccy bits to see how difficult it will be to sort the handbrake issues my CDX has and due to my limited knowledge and tools it scares me!  :-/

The car has a scraping/grinding noise coming from the rear and the pads/discs look worn enough to be replaced and the handbrake has been adjusted to the maximum and is still ineffective.

I dont think i'll be able to get the car off the missus long enough to attempt it myself as she works and has to use it for the school runs plus i'm struggling to find a price for the handbrake shoes. Ive found the discs and pads as a set for £40 and wondered if anyone could recommend a supplier/price for the shoes? Also, I was wondering what sort of labour charge I would expect to pay for fitting and setting up this lot.

Any help is appreciated. I'm in Grantham, Lincs if anyone fancies popping round and doing it for me, i've got a coolbag full of Stella's that needs emptying!

Hi,

IM led to believe that its not that big a job too change/clean the rear brakes/handbrake shoes. Haynes manual is quite a good walkthrough and theres a part in the Miantanence section of this forum that tells you how to clean them up, not much different too changing them

Most motor factors should have the handbrake shoes 15 quid - ish I think.  I seem to recall the Vx ones are much more expensive.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by adjusted to its limit - do you mean at the wheels or the central adjuster in the middle of the car?

Might be worth just getting a quote for disks/pads/shoes and installation all in?

The shoes should not be adjusted at the wheels.  Trouble is, most garages do  >:(

Hence, want it done properly, do it yourself rather than trust a garage.

thanks guys, ive sourced all the bits for around £55 so its just getting someone to do it. I have a mate who is competant enough, but he's chocked out with work so i'll have to wait. Might pop her in Tanvics and see what they say as a guide to a fitted price. Cheers

Could be the handbrake pads themselves along with a broken clips or so. Had that problem about 2 years ago, the pin that holds the hand brake pads o it retained by the back plate and does bend. I fixed it by getting my neighbour to weld round it to give it more strength and then we filed it so it fits again.

Took us about 2 hours of playing around to get it all done, getting the handbrake right took most of the time.
