Title: Cleaning headlights
Post by: TheBoy on 15 April 2007, 19:37:48
The tractor seems to have some glue type residue on the HIDs (I'm guessing its had those gay 'eyebrow' things on at some point).  Anyone know how to remove it?

Also, I have some spare projector headlights in the garage with what looks like dried salt deposits. Any clues on how to shift them?

I T-cut mine, came up a lot better, but that was only general grime, dunno about glue, worth a try though

Acetone? ( wife/daughter's nail polish remover) Be carefull though! I used a bit on the screen of my bike to remove the dealer's stickers and it caused a bit white bloom. Fortunately it polished off!  :-?

Acetone ought to be OK on glass?  Ive used that Autoglym tar remover with real good results, doesnt cause any damage either.  Providing you dont rub too hard I guess  ::)

Have you tried any of the stain removers? i.e Dab It Off, there is another brand can't remember the name, they do stain removers for blood, grass, grease etc, it can be bought from most decent high st stores, Home Bargains, maybe Tesco...  DO NOT USE ACETONE,   Carb cleaner!!!!!!  try a sample spot first, Xylene may be OK!!!!   Even butter may help...

Aren't the clear lenses on projectors and hids plastic?

DO NOT USE ACETONEDC

Hi Dave,

Why not acetone on glass?  I used it last week to shift some really stubborn glue on the windscreen from the previous owners glued on tax disk holder.  Worked really well, did the trick and no visible effect on the glass.  (Or so I hope!)

I got a can of "sticky label remover" from Maplins which removes most adhesive residues.

Failing that carb cleaner if it's a glass lens.

Ah - in which case dont touch with acetone.  Do you mean the outside of the 'glass'?  Im fairly sure mine (HIDs) is glass and not plastic.... Hang on, I'll go and check.  (looks at car)  Hmm, those seem like plastic to me.  Dave is bang on the money then - dont use acetone!!!

Senny ones are Glass, seams to have a wider beam than the projectors. But cannot project as far as my Omega ones...

My omega has far worse body work than my Senator had at a similar age - every panel has some kind of rust spot. I'll not be getting another to replace this.
